I have hyperthyroidsim and I've noticed since taking my medication one day 5mg another 10 mg. My face has started to feel and look a bit puffy. Do you have any idea what is causing this

Also my ears feel clogged up

Have you got any recent thyroid and vitamin results

What dose of Carbimazole were you on before?

previous post

Have you had thyroid antibodies tested

TPO and TG antibodies for Hashimoto’s or Graves’ disease

TSI or Trab antibodies for Graves’ disease

Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

Only do private testing early Monday or Tuesday morning.

I have hypo T but not on medication yet. My face puffed up significantly about 3 or 4 months ago. I cut out gluten and dairy on an elimination diet and within about 3 days the puffy face disappeared. At the time I had no idea there was a link between the thyroid and gluten, I've remained gluten free and mostly dairy free with a few exceptions and I take lactase if I need to.

Are the 10mg and the 5mg doses actually T3? (If yes, they should be 10mcg and 5 mcg rather than mg.) It is not recommended that anyone alternate doses of T3. Instead T3 should be the same dose every day.

T4 doses can be alternated, but not T3.

I think she’s on Carbimazole

Ah, okay. That passed me by completely. I'll stop answering since I'm still confused.

I've always understood that a puffy face is a symptom of an underactive thyroid. It's called myxoedema.

I was hypo before now I'm hyper so that's why I'm quite surprised the face is getting puffy again

Has endocrinologist actually confirmed you have Graves’ disease by testing TSI or Trab antibodies

When are you due next test?

Bring test forward perhaps. You may need dose reduction in Carbimazole

Early stage Hashimoto’s can swing temporarily with hyper type symptoms and blood test results as cells break down releasing excess thyroid hormones….but it’s only transient and not true hyper.

You’re legally entitled to copies of all your test results

I have all the results electronically

Test - OK will see what they say about bringing it forward

So this ' puffiness " has happened before when you were considered as hypo and taking T4 ?

Which antibodies have been run - might look like TPO : TgAB : TRab : TSI : on print out of results ?

Do you have there your original TSH, T3 and T4 blood test results and ranges from when first unwell - what was diagnosed and what was prescribed ?

OK - so a TSH @ 0.01 - with a T4 @ 16.00 and a T3 @ 6.70 -

no ranges but presume an issue as the T3 ' looks to be ' proportionately higher than the T4 :

What were taking for these results - T4 or the AT drug ?

Can you scroll back and find your original blood test readings and ranges at diagnosis as the antibodies reading and ranges should be around the same time ?

Thank you - any antibody readings and ranges in any of your results ?

As in tpo, I don't have that to hand but it did come back as graves

If that's what you're asking

Ys - but TPO antibodies are not Graves antibodies - and usually associated with Hashimoto's Auto Immune Disease :

The main antibody involved in Graves Disease is generally written as a TRab - a Thyrotropin Receptor antibody -

with a subset of TRab - for blocking antibodies and TSI - for stimulating antibodies -

so at any one time you can have blocking or simulating antibodies controlling your thyroid function causing a mixture of hyper or hypo symptom - depending on which set of antibodies are stronger - sometimes these 2 strains of extremes of symptoms burn themselves out leaving you feeling relatively ' normal ' for you.

OK, I shall look on the portal for the trab results

Hi Pulp88,Just to say, from personal experience, when I was first found to be Hyperactive, the Endos had problems getting my thyroid balanced. Their fault because they forgot all about me and I never heard anything back for another blood test for a good 5 months! So was on high dose of Carbimizole & Beta blockers for very Hyperactive thyroid.. consequently I became VERY HYPO! Hospital looked at me in shock as could tell from just looking at me I wasn't good. Cut long story short, they couldn't get me balanced for a good year and I experienced severely both symptoms of Hypo and Hyper. What I do remember when at one time was extremely Hypo.. my face, eyes and hands were puffy, speech slow and slurred but ALSO hearing became affected badly. Remember trying take work message for my husband and had to keep asking person repeat their name. Eventually man got quite irritated. I felt so embarrassed. I'd say your levels have most likely become Hypo. I'd contact doctor and say about symptoms as these are definitely Hypo. Ensure you ask for full thyroid blood test. Not just TSH. When my journey started I'd absolutely no idea about anything putting my complete trust in the endos! Good luck

Thanks for the above quite useful insight. I remember when I first found out I had a thyroid issue. Didn't think things would be this complicated.

Let's see how things go, didnt have any gluten yesterday so seeing how the rest of the week goes
