Does anybody struggle with Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ). I have recently been getting a lot of pain in jaw by cheeks bones and wondering would I see a doctor for this or Dentist as I believe there is a link between both Hashi and TMJ.

Hashimoto’s & TMJ
There's a definite link between TMJ and hypermobility of the joints. Is that something you can identify with?
Did you manage to get full thyroid blood testing done to include FT3 and also your key vitamins ferritin, folate, B12 & D3?
It’s just something that has recently come on and I was reading about it and it mentioned UAT link! It’s just never ending always something else. I’m due to have thyroid, full blood test, diabetes, kidney and anaemia tests on 31st August. I’m on Folic acid for low folate.
It might be worth finding out if the blood tests you are due to have will include folate, B12, ferritin and vit d.
And if the thyroid test will include Tsh and Ft4. Ft3 is unlikely to be tested if these are NHS tests.
As all these will be needed in order for people here to help you.
Just a heads up so that you don't wait ages til beginning of September, come back here and learn you need to do more tests🙂!

I thought I had very bad TMJ this past year or so. It’s been so bad I’ve struggled to sleep with my jaw resting on the pillow. I have now realised that it’s linked with when I feel hypo as it comes and goes depending on my dosage (still increasing)
Years ago, I had some very unpleasant pain shooting from TMJ across my face.
I suspected then, and still suspect, vitamin B12.
I started taking 1000 microgram methylcobalamin. No proof, no tests, but I think it very, very slowly helped.
If you were lucky, you'd see a maxillofacial specialist. A sort of super-dentist!
Hi. I had this same problem 3 weeks ago. Went to bed fine and woke up with the most awful pain in the jaw joint next to my ear. I couldn't eat or swallow without it hurting. My tooth at the back hurt as well and I couldn't make out what it was. I went to dentist and he said tooth was ok and no infections etc. I used to gently massage bone near to my ear and after 8 days it went. I only had this once before and it only last a couple of days.I also have Hashimotos but didn't think there might be a link. Might be worth trying the dentist first just in case of tooth problem, if he can't help try GP. If he no help and it persists as helvella post suggests a maxillofacial specialist is the one to see. It is painful. Strangely my B12 levels are not that great so not sure if there is a connection. Anyway, hope it gets better soon.
Discuss getting a mouth guard with your dentist
About £300 now I believe
Had mine over 10 years…..was £100 then ….amazing result
I have had TMJ on and off for about 15 years, and yes I have Hashimotos. It is usually linked with a low hypo or adrenal problem. Or a stressed period I may be going through. My dentist gave me a physio exercise sheet,, specifically to help you with your own exercises, and that is helpful, but the most helpful thing for me is the homeopathic treatment my homeopath gives me. It works every time. Whilst in a TMJ period of pain, make sure you don’t yawn or open your mouth widely.
This is just anecdotal...
I remember a member of the forum many years ago with TMJ found that taking high dose vitamin B12, specifically methylcobalamin, helped to relieve the pain.
I can't remember if the condition just improved or if it disappeared entirely.
What is TMJ? Is if like this:-
I have a problem with one side of my jaw. The problem comes and goes - it’s like the jaw doesn’t go back(beneath the ear) into place properly after eating or yawning . it’s painful - although only when opening my mouth. It makes eating very painful. It feels like my jaw is about to dislocate. Something feels stuck in the wrong place and the ‘hinge’ doesn’t fit together properly. Sometimes it suddenly goes back into place properly and then it’s fine for weeks, only to slip out again.
I’m having problems at the moment and wonder if it’s linked to the fact that GP insisted on a lower dose of Levo .
ok, thanks, sounds like the same thing. Searching other posts some are saying it’s due to low T3.
