UTI's: hello all it's been awhile since I post... - Thyroid UK
UTI's
I think you need to see a good gynecologist. Given your age, the UTIs sound more like a low estrogen thing. I definitely get them if my estrogen is too low. I had horrible fibroid which I ended up needing a hysterectomy. I have since learned that low thyroid can be the reason. Have you been diagnosed with hypothyroidism? If so, are you on an adequate amount? Do you have recent bloodwork?
What type of test have you taken to find out which bacteria is causing your UTI? A broth test is best and will inform you not only what bacteria you have but importantly which antibiotic will treat it too. I don't know about fibroids, sorry. I saw a surgeon urologist for UTI and he told me about the broth test, which worked.
I had a lot of UTIs in my mid forties. A couple of years ago I started using vagifem which is a low dose topical application of oestrogen (pessary) and that fixed the problem. It was due to the menopause in my case.
After a number of years with UTI episodes....and various tests and scans and treatments including oestrogen pessaries and urology physiotherapy....my GP diagnosed Chronic UTI
But offered no actual cause!
I now take a daily prophylactic antibiotic and when flares occur( fairly frequently) I move to stronger treatment doses for up to 7days.
I'm told it can take years to resolve.....and I do see some improvement after several years.
I have a form of thyroid hormone resistance which unknown to me, for decades, caused me to have low cellular T3 which I now treat with a supraphysiological dose of T3-only.
I'm now convinced that the cutis have been the result of low cellular T3...and said so to my GP.....and that the T3 I now take, along with the abx, is slowly helping to improve bladder function.
We already know that utis can be a symptom of hypothyroidism so checking thyroid hormone levels is important!
I have followed the recommendation of someone else on here to use d-Mannose (for utis) with good results after one month. Like the poster above one of my friends found Vagifem, oestrogen containing cream applied within the vagina, to be the solution for her.
