I have been given antibiotics for a UTI and they made me feel really awful. I read an article about certain antibiotics, esp for urine infections not being a good match for those with Hashimoto’s.
I wondered if anyone else had experience with feeling awful on antibiotics and trying to combat UTI’s.
I seem to remember it was Ciprofloxacin that was dreadful for me and I had untold side effects that affected me for weeks afterwards. Which one have you taken?
Really? What kind of things/side effects? I’ve been searching for the packet which I kept but now can’t find so will have to check with the GP. I know I took a floxin one before ( Jan 2020) and felt dreadful so I had asked not to have the same one.
I think this one was Nitrofurantoin
I was prescribed that antibiotic last week. After the third capsule I had the most horrendous stomach pains that lasted over an hour (like labour pains but no baby at the end of it) followed by the most awful diarrhoea. I didn't take any more. I can't take Ciprofloxacin either after an adverse reaction to it previously.
Really ?Sorry to hear that - what can we do to heal the UTI - Hennerton suggested Sweet Cures which looks natural - I’ll be happy if thy helps.They gave be tummy pain too and then my body was aching and brain so zoned on them
No idea what we can do I'm afraid, it was the first time I had been diagnosed with a UTI, and it was a shock as I had gone to the doctors for a completely different reason but GP wanted a sample, after I told him all my symptoms, and it showed up an infection.
I felt very hypo so I think it affected the absorption of my Levothyroxine and I had other pains unrelated to a urinary issue. Mostly, however, it was bladder related with pain and its failure to get to the root of the matter that wore me out. I now use Sweet Cures “D. Mannose”. Worth looking it up and taking a night time dose every day to prevent another attack.

Yes, very gentle on the stomach. I buy the tablets for convenience and always carry a pack with me but the loose powder is good dissolved in warm water if you fear an infection is starting and you are at home. You can also buy packs of dip strips that can be used for home testing of urine.

I think they are more common with thyroid imbalances and that can be when we are on replacement treatment but perhaps not on the correct dose, owing to the obsession amongst the medical profession to test and be guided only by TSH results. What treatment are you on currently?

Well- I was on NDT from 2015-2020 sourcing it from abroad, latterly Nature Thyroid. Then it was withdrawn and I tried to get Thyroid S but the batches seemed unreliable.My TSH went up a lot earlier this year and so I went though the GP route and now taking 100mgs having raised more slowly this time as first prescribed 125/150. I was taking 3 grains of NDT so still def under medicated but raising Levo causes all sorts of issues - anxiety, gut issues, gastro ( which flare badly after getting Covid last year) so I will test next week to see if Levo has brought down the TSH then thinking of adding a small amount of NDT or switching back if that doesn’t work.

I already take Oil of Oregano capsules from Greece (I have lung disease plus pseudomonas colonised in my lungs, so I take it as a precaution to hopefully prevent flare ups of the pseudomonas).
I'm looking at the probiotics and might take a course of the relevant ones. I am on a permanent prophylactic antibiotic 3 times a week for my lung disease so it wont hurt to take probiotics from time to time.

No, it's not that. The prophylactic antiboiotic I take 3 times a week is standard treatment for one of my lung diseases so it has a specific purpose. It's not a broad spectrum antibiotic. If I get a chest infection I stop that one and take a course of Amoxycillin.
When I was told I needed an antibiotic for the UTI I asked about Amoxycillin but was told they'd give me a different one so I wouldn't have to stop the prophylactic antibiotic.
But the oil of oregano is "extra insurance" and I take that pretty much regularly but do have "off times" occasionally.
Yes UTI is more common in thyroid patients, especially if levels are “off”

They will be replaced with a generic nitrofurantoin 50mg capsule (£13.92 for 30 capsules), however this is an almost four-fold increase in price. There are no other generic capsules on the market.
I am not sure about an antibiotic choice, but anytime I have ever had a UTI, I immediately used 'URAL', powder that is a urine alkinizer that worked quickly to take the pain out of urinating. If you don't have that where you live, bicarbonate sodo (baking soda) mixed in with water and drank will do the same thing. Also, I would take "HIPREX" tablets that stop the bacteria from sticking to your bladder. They are urine tract antibacterial tablets that are OTC here in Australia. Taking both got me a lot more comfortable and over a few minor UTI infections without antibiotics.
