Thank you for reply- I am hypo, PA and auto. TESTS!!!!!!!!!!!! easier to hitch a ride to Mars these days. Used to do regular private tests, purse strings no longer stretching that far.
Iam on levo 75, just upped that to 100, also lio 50 - self medicatate and supply, keeps things sort of balanced but had 3 huge flare ups of auto last year which always throws things out of kilter, get back to even ground and then out of the blue a UTI again with specimen tested and positive.Upped my levo myself and got GP to go with that for 3 months then test again. TSH up to arounfd 3++, normal 1 or less.
They only test T4 AND TSH as you know, so informed chap they are pretty pointless with out T3 and as he thought my tsh was low corrected him on that. He will test again in May with T3 test included, Keep my vits etc topped up, diet watched, the general rules and it has kept me upright for the past 6-7 years (I am 80). Maybe I should apply for a bladder transplant!!!
Be careful. Once we are diagnosed with a chronic condition such as hypothyroidism, we tend to blame EVERYTHING on Thyroid.I have had multiple UTIs in my life, mostly sex related, and they have had nothing to do with TSH ir t4 or t3.
Thank you - definately not sex believe me! I am just testing out what could be potentially out of zink. I do D- Manatose daily and have upped it with liquid manatose as well, and it is a boon at keeping the little blighters in the bladder under control. So far PA is ok, thyroid seems to be a little out of kilter and as for auto - well what one can say , try supplements and hope for the best..
Getting input from other folk sometimes will bring a new aspect and I am wiling to try anything if it helps. So thanks again for replying.
Thank you - on it and yes it has helped a lot - Read links Dippy Dame listed - one from Australia was a real eye opener - might be worth taking a look.Gosd bless.
Given that, for good health, every cell in the body needs a constant and adequate supply of T3, and that UTIs are a known symptom of hypothyroidism I would be reluctant to dismiss a link as a possibility. In my case most of my decades-long health issues and symptoms have proved to be the result of low cellular T3....
I have been having UTI since I was 25 years old with a perfect Thyroid. In fact, My thyroid got initially sick when I was 40, 15 years later, and because of the mumps virus. I have NOT got Hashimoto or any of the other autoinmune diseases. Not everything is related to Thyroid. In my case, the trigger is sexual intercourse and it has to do with friction, menstrual cycle and vaginal disbiosis.
I have no thyroid and take NDT. I have only had one UTI in my life and I am 75 years old. After three separate urine tests it was still missed by the NHS which uses a 1957 test.Anyway after only being seven days of antibiotics I lost 24 lbs in weight over the next three months and was extremely ill. It took over a year to find the right consultant to help me. The most important test was a private broth test which found exactly what I had and exactly which antibiotic to use to get rid of it. It had nothing to do with Thyroid.
Thank you for your reply and although you have had only 1 in your life it is not the same for many thousands who are suffering greatly from this chronic condition on top of the other conditions, especially young ladies, as this has consequences for their private and personal relationships. Dippy Dame added links which I checked out and was really surprised at what research has been produced these days, it may bring light at the end of the tunnel for all those who are suffering and being fobbed off by ill informed doctors. Perhaps you could check for yourself, especially the one from Australia which I hope will help many on this site.
Sorry I fully understand the distress that these cause. I was only trying to help in thatmany are treated with antibiotics which will never work because the type of bacteria
is never treated with the correct treatment. I was treated by a surgeon in Leeds who
appeared to know more than GP's it was his speciality. He cured me.
I appreciated that fact and you were fortunate to live at a time when the majority of medics were in the profession for the right reasons and did their best for their patients. The exact opposite is now what folk are faced with, sites like this testify to that fact, reading some of appeals for help are heartbreaking and at my age I feel so very sorry for them.
Any new information which might give a glimmer of hope is surely to be welcomed and made known but until then we just have to take what we can and share what some have found to work, whatever the condition may be. The links Dippy Dame gave were eye opening to me and could be a solution to this particular condition especially for younger people including men whose lives are so disrupted by this condition and impacts on a side of life that is important to us all. At my age it is no longer a problem but I still have my memories. It is worth looking at and researching for themselves.
Sorry if I came across a bit hard but if you had read the account of the young lady from Australia it was so sad and made me realise just how devastating this condition was, oldie here had to have her memory jogged to really see it from another aspect.
Chronic UTIs can very much be a symptom of hypothyroidism.
Your FT3 may still be low.
Clearly a shot into the past... but 4 years ago your T3 was 41.8% through the reference range which was too low. The Frees should be approaching 75% through the range...but we are all different and this does vary a little. Perhaps recent labs are higher but worth checking and improving if not.
Prof M-L sadly died recently but his work is being carried on at his Harley Street Clinic. I am not a patient but have recently read his excellent book, Cystitis Unmasked
Dippjy Dame you are a champion - I knew there must be research someplace in this day and age - if we could only get the admin to look at the links, especially the one from down under. With the number of responses I am getting this information needs to be made available, any age this is a crippling condition and embassing too, who wants to be dribbling in public, not to mention the pong! For the younger ladies it must be even more difficult.
With all the rest we cope with anything we can eliminate has to be a bonus.
If you put the following into your search engine/Google - Chronic UTI Women's Support Group on Facebook - you will find a link to a private group which you can ask to join. You need to give some details of your symptoms , medication etc. They are hugely knowledgeable.
You might also consider buying Professor James Malone-Lees book, Cystitis Unmasked.
I bought mine from Amazon
Since this is a thyroid group we can't expect them to do more than let us share links which I did a few months ago
Thanks again for this infomation - have referred many who responded to the links and who knows , perhaps some one will get help that they did not know existed.
I’ve been prone to UTI’s. The supplement D-Mannose is a gamechanger. It’s a natural sugar type substance that attaches itself to the bacteria causing the UTI and gets flushed out when you pee. I think that’s the mechanism but definitely worth a go. I’ve recommended it to friends who’ve had it for most of their adult lives and it’s liberated them.
So many have been responding that I am in awe, it seems there are a good many in the same boat. I am referring them to Dippy Dame who has put in many links but one in particular was a real eye opener, from Australia, might be worth having a look.
I don’t know your menopause status, but I’ve just been reading Kate Muir’s book on the menopause, and she writes about how topical HRT creams and vaginal pessaries can protect against UTI’s, as your urethra also suffers from lack of estrogen.
Post menopause by 30 years at least. Thank you for replying, may I suggest you check Dippy Dame's response - it is an eye opener and may give you a new perspective on this problem.
I have hypothyroidism and have had problems with UTIs for years. I am in my 70's and take d mannose and a prescribed vaginal estrogen cream twice a week which helps with dryness. So far it has been two years and no UTIs. Occasionally, I feel some mild symptoms and then drink a quart of cranberry juice a day for several days until it goes away. Hope this helps.
