Horrific nausea

I am experiencing awful nausea. I am just going up from 25 to 50mcg of levothyroxine as I thought the nausea I've had over the last 3 months was due to being on such a low dose. Now I can't do anything or leave the house as I feel so ill. I'm literally at my wits end and it's getting worse rather than better. This has been going on since February when I started on levothyroxine.

My TSH has gone from 22 to 4 abd my T3 was only 6 at the beginning.

I really feel like just coming off the tablets as they are literally ruining my life.

Anyone had anything similar. I'm just so desperate.

Which brand Levo are you on now?

You could try splitting your dose morning and bed time.

Have you had your vitamin levels checked - ferritin, folate, B12 & D3?

Have you tried a gluten free diet?

I'm on B12 and D3 and have been gluten and dairy free for over 3 weeks and just getting worse and worse. I'm on Wockhardt as I've tried TEVA and accord and had the same reaction. I feel so ill I just want to come off it all.

Nothing is making it any better. I'm even wondering if I need the medication as going up has made me 100% worse.

A B complex is usually recommended here to keep ll the B's in balance.

What were your vitamin levels from a blood test?

Lower doses of levo can make things worse initially as they are not enough to replace your own natural thyroid hormone production. Its best to stick with it as it will pass in time as you have longer on the hormones plus get to a higher dose closer to where you need to be.

I had a B complex but suffered insomnia and agitation with it. I'm very sensitive to any kind of supplements or medication.

It's just worrying as I can't really eat as I feel so ill and have lost nearly a stone in 2 months and don't really want to lose more.

I will try having 25mcg in a morning and the same at night. Sorry to seem so desperate but I just don't know what to do for the best.

It would help to know which B complex you had as I could then suggest something different.

You will come through this it will just take some time.

I was on Solgar B complex 50 I'm now just on folic acid (lamberts). Thanks for the support I just feel so ill and it's been like this for 3 months and it's getting worse. I really hope things will get better.

The Solgar B complex doesn't contain active vitamins. There is a certain group of people that cannot use the basic form of them. Better to try active/methyl B vitamins. The same goes for folic acid. It is a form that some people cannot use.

Any one of these B complexes would be better.

I am currently on 50mcg and thankfully my 6 weeks is up in about 10 days and I get tested. I am hoping the bloodwork comes back saying I need an increase because I still am very symptomatic. I have had stomach issues too and just trying to grit through it. I take ginger tablets for it and they help some. My worse symptoms are fatigue and brain fog.

You were on 25mcg for a long time. How long have you been on the 50mcg?

If I understand correctly, with thyroid you replace the hormone and not "top" it off. I think most people need more than 50mcg., but we have to slowly raise our dose.

Personally, I wouldn't start mixing a lot of supplements or vitamins yet. Your system is already trying to figure the thyroid out, so don't give it something else right now.

I understand the feeling bad part. I have been so irritable and that is not like me at all.

It's the terrible nausea for me. I've gone gluten and dairy free but that hasn't made much difference. I sip ginger tea and that helps slightly. I have brain fog and fatigue which I can cope fine with, but the nausea is so debilitating.

Hopefully it'll start getting better. I hope you feel better soon too.

Thanks! I honestly have thought I needed to go to the emergency room a few times. Sometimes I get bad pain with it aa well. I am gluten free and have been for a while. It doesn't seem to make much difference. I tend to clinch my jaw a lot too. I wear a bite guard at night, but it doesn't seem to make much difference.

With the TSH you had, you really need to be on thyroid. I hope everything settles down soon.

I had severe nausea until I got my thyroid levels up. I can really sympathise as it’s horrible and unrelenting and your life is put on hold. My mother had the same when she was first diagnosed. Things do get better but unfortunately you have to be patient and persevere.

I worked on vitamin levels and went gluten-free but ultimately I think it was getting the thyroid levels right and also your body takes time to adjust to them.

I hope that helps a bit.

In a twisted way it does 😁 knowing that other people have been through this and come out the other side is definitely positive for me as at the moment it feels relentless. My nausea is much worse in the morning and early afternoon, then after that it does calm a bit. I'm going to try taking 25mcg in the morning and 25mcg at night and see if that helps.

Thank you, take care.

Yes, mine was a lot worse earlier in the day. Seems like it’s going on forever at the time but keep at it, you will get there and eventually feel good again.

You can feel nauseous when under medicated

Levothyroxine doesn’t top up failing thyroid, it replaces it, so when left on inadequate dose levothyroxine you (in effect) become more hypothyroid

So it seems. I'm trying to get up. I've moved from 25 to 50 blood test booked in 5 weeks hopefully then up again but what a horrible nightmare getting there.

I agree with SlowDragon - I would actually vomit at times when I started levo . It wasn't until I got up to a decent dose for me that I no longer had this issue :-) I did find that making sure I drank lots of water with my dose also helped.

Thank you for this, I can cope with the other symptoms but the nausea is awful. I'm going to try and split my doses and see if that helps plus lots of water.
