Medicinal Mushroom Supplements - Yay or Nay With Hashimoto's?

Hi good people,

Those of us who have Hashi don't want to be consuming things that stimulate the immune system.

Yet, I'm still trying to understand if mushroom supplements (Reishi, cordyceps, shitake, etc) actually stimulate or modulate the immune system.

From my research:

* Some experts say medicinal mushrooms are a grey area for people with Hashi - it might trigger it further

* Some say it's beneficial for people with Hashi and autoimmune and it can help modulate the immune system.

I myself have gone through quite a bit of research about it and still can't quite make up my mind.

What's your understanding about medicinal mushrooms for people with an autoimmune (even if it's in remission)? Or your personal experience with Hashi and mushrooms?

Hi Juliet,

Apologies this isn’t an answer about mushrooms specifically. But I do have an associated question.

I’m type 1 diabetic and hypothyroid, so assume I have Hashimoto’s (never confirmed). I found it really interesting what you’re saying about stimulating the immune system.

I’ve had some problems recently, and it came at a point where I decided to try and improve my health - changed my diet to focus on gut health, micro biome, etc. They say the immune system mainly lies in the gut

I was wondering if that could cause problems? Does it make the immune system better so that is runs as normal and is less likely to over-react and cause/worsen auto-immune conditions ie ‘better modulated’ as you describe? Or does it turn your immune system into a menace, much better at taking out perceived threats, sometimes incorrectly and thus worsening auto-immune conditions?

It’d be interesting to hear people’s thoughts on this. It seems counter-intuitive to think you shouldn’t eat healthy foods. But could be very important in this case.

I have hypothyroidism, sjogrens, vitiligo and autoimmune pancreatitis, almost certain my journey began with hashis. I have taken all of those mushrooms you mentioned and more. I had no issues at all with them. The one that stands out the most with the greatest felt benefit for me is Cordyceps. I swear by it. I've witnessed it work in friends as well. Amazing for afib, heart palpitations.

Bulk Supplements Cordyceps Extract. Serving size is 1500mg which is a half of a teaspoon. Powder form, not the capsule form. I take it raw or mix in my coffee. Great flavor. Cordyceps is high in Adenosine. Research Adenosine to get a better idea on what it does.

I had palpitations daily for years. I had afib for years. My cardiologist wanted to place a pacemaker in my chest. I began researching and found out about cordyceps. Desperate, I bought some. Very first dose, I felt my heart literally stop. It scared the crap out of me. It hit fast and unexpected. More research and I found that adenosine does that as it is resetting the heart. It only does that if you have palpitations.About 5 seconds later, I felt great. I had a hmmmmm moment. Next day, I took cordyceps and felt great. I had another palpitation a week later. Same thing, I felt my heart stop. Then felt great. I took cordyceps daily for a month. Now I only take it if I have a palpitation or my heart rate goes up. My heart rate would hit 150+ easily before cordyceps. Now it sits between 80-90 while sitting and may hit 120 when outside doing work. My wife went into afib, no palpitations. It corrected her afib.

Juliet_22,

At xmas time I was given a huge packet of dried Cordyceps Militaris direct from China to use in my cooking, so the whole family have been benefiting.

Cordyceps are one of Isabella Wentz’s top favourites and also high in selenium for us hypos.

My understanding is, that, like with a lot of other research, there is no consensus and much more research is needed. I take cordyceps and seem to feel fine taking it. However, this seems to be just another thing that requires a trial and error approach. Yup, nothing ever appears to be plainly straight forward and mostly we have to figure things out for ourselves. I hope you can find out how medicinal mushrooms work (or don't) for you. All the best.
