Hypothyroidism and perimenopause night sweats

Perhaps a niche question but I don't sweat anymore really... It has to be a very hot day.

I think I've been having night sweats but I don't wake up drenched... I do wake up sweatier than I've been in years though.

My question is, I suppose, should I expect night sweats to be full on or will they be tempered by the fact that I don't sweat anymore?

Me neither.... but I put it down to the fact that I don't even try to do any cardio and opt to sit in the shade these days?

I only had a few night sweat after ditching the Mirena but it wasn't much of an issue for me during Peri or after 🤷‍♀️

The not-sweating thing is defo a hypo thing for me!

I just was trying to work out if what I'm experiencing are night-sweats (or as closest as I'll get to it because my body is broken) or not!

in reply toTiggerMe

I've realised I've been having hot flushes without realising that's what they are. 🤣

Maybe we don't get them so bad as we tick over at a lower temperature anyway?

When I briefly had them I was ticking over at 36.3 and having to have a hot bath once or twice a day just to warm up 🥶

in reply toTiggerMe

Yeah, I was running at 35.4 for ages. 🥶

I woke up sweating last night with an actual bead of sweat running off my head. 🤣

We are no longer reptiles 💃🤸‍♀️😅

I still snuggle under a 12tog feather duvet, I'm just not ready to give it up yet 😶‍🌫️

in reply toTiggerMe

Speak for yourself. I still follow the sun to warm up. 😂☀️🦎

I'm ticking over at a balmy 36.7 these days 😏

Sounds like you've not reached your opotomin dose of thyroid meds!! 🤣 I well remember sleeping under a 13tog duvet, with a throw, thick PJs & a hot water bottle, heating on full blast (back in the day when you didn't need a mortgage to heat your home) & still felt cold.... Temp languished low 35.4C.I also remember after optimising my thyroid dose that my temp still stayed at 36.4C and I came to the conclusion that that must be normal for me.....but when I started on b12 jabs my temp shot up to 36.7C & has stayed there ever since. What a joy!! 😊😂

Perhaps but my temp now is 36.7 so I'm good on that front!

Just trying to figure out if my lack of sweating also means I don't have proper night sweats. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Perhaps you are just a beginner and you'll get better at it as your sex hormones dwindle 🤣

Or it is just another fail to add to the list! Can't even do a proper dripping hot flush 🙄 honestly what a loser 😏🤣🤗

in reply toTiggerMe

Right? 🤣😂

I'd just count yourself lucky! Not everyone has them..... Mine were very mild. I had few menopause symptoms apart from poor memory!! And that's not improved now I'm long since through it!! 🤣😂

before you jump to any conclusion that this is menopause related, have you checked your b vits and vitamin D lately. I get night sweats when these are low especially the vitamin D.

in reply toAuntyp62

Yes, all could be better but with all the other ongoing symptoms I have it makes more sense that it's perimenopause but it's a reminder to keep up my vitamins, thank you! :)

I have never worked up a hot flush or a real sweat. I do get ‘clammy’ from time to time but I associate it more with what I eat. High carbs but sugar in particular. Friends drink quite a lot of alcohol and they seemed to suffer a lot of night sweats, even now about twenty years after menopause. When my meds are working for me I am less ‘clammy’ in bed and that makes me feel better, more comfortable and relaxed!?

this is a fascinating thread, I’m the opposite, pre DX I was always been a real sweaty betty unrelated to temperature. Like a nervous self conscious fright sweat. I had an op on my armpits in my 30s and apparently I have excess sweat glands compared to ‘normal’.

Actually quite like hot weather. I really feel the cold though. Sorting out my vits and thyroid hormones has made me less sweaty in the day which is great.

When I was on HRT I had nightsweats continuously had to sleep on a towel. That all stopped when the GP stopped the HRT and DX thyroid and started Levo.

For a few months now since being on 125mcg T4 my pre period nightsweats were down to a few nights the week before starting, after starting a tiny dose of T3 my pre period night sweat was down to one night the night before which was wonderful (I had two months of that) this month same doses I’ve had a week of night sweats, back to sleeping on a towel and topper is in the washing machine. (I have all wool topper, pillow, low tog duvet/100% cotton sheets, window open etc anything polyester is like sleeping in a binbag, hair in a cropped bob because it’s my chest/neck and head that sweat most) not sweaty in the day though. Plus I’m still cold 🙄 blood testing tomorrow to see what is what . 🌱

I think sweating is interesting and also complicated, and is the body telling us something is out of balance. I suspect I’ve been hypo most of my life, but diagnosed in my 60’s. I have found my sweating has changed a lot over the years, from menarche excessive armpit sweat, during menopause sweats about every 45 minutes, post menopause hardly any armpit sweat but sweats mainly affect my head and neck (and bizarrely back of knees!). Since I’ve had a Levo increase, my sweats have decreased, and I’m now recognising that they occur about an hour before a dose (I split doses into 4 doses in 24 hours) and half an hour to an hour after a dose, so some of it is definitely due to Levothyroxine. I’m usually too cold and wear lots of layers, or sweating. In temperatures over about 25 degrees, I can sweat continuously and have to be careful I don’t get dehydrated, so I suspect my cortisol/aldosterone is a bit low, though doctors tell me their tests say otherwise, mind you I have no faith in how they have tested my aldosterone. I’m on Fludrocortisone for low blood pressure, and I’ve found if I up the dose slightly in hot temperatures the excessive sweating stops. What I’ve found helpful is wearing layers and a large collection of fans - at least one in every room!

Hello Witchinghour - I have Hashimoto's and am post menopausal. I rarely sweat when exercising and my temperature is usually between 35.5 and 36.5 which I assume are hypothyroid symptoms.

My experience of menopause and hot flushes was not good! About one year after the menopause I had terrible hot flushes at night, I didn't sweat much but would just have terrible waves of burning heat about 18 times a night (yes, I resorted to counting) so the longest I ever slept was about 20 minutes. This was so debilitating that in the end I decided to take HRT which I had been trying to avoid - none of the natural remedies I tried worked.

I think menopausal symptoms can vary a lot, I have a few friends who don't seem to have any despite not being particularly fit and healthy.

I've found that I get quite hot at night now that I've switched from Levo to NDT - I don't know if that's thyroid or menopause but it isn't too bad so doesn't bother me much. In my experience it's very difficult to work out which is which as the symptoms can be similar. Good luck!
