Hearing loss

I have a hearing aid, well 2 actually but just wear 1 when I am at home watching TV. I have found the last few. months that my hearing has got progressively worse, and I can't work out why.

My thyroid was removed 2003, along with 1 or more (accidentally) parathyroids. I have to be sure to take D3 calcium K2 for my bones/lack of parathyroids. I am wondering if it is a lack of any supplement, or any particular one that could cause this problem.

Any thoughts please?

Should you be wearing both hearing aids all of the time

Probably, but if I wear them outside it is easy to lose. I was walking my dog and one of them fell off my ear, so I keep them safe indoors, or in classes.

Perhaps go back and get them fitted properly and then I’m sure your hearing will

I have the same problems Margo and I do wear both mine. I was told to because they are balanced, so I don't think only wearing one is causing you problems, just we are slowly 'running down' (horrible thought). Mind you, they do need servicing now and then, but it is just one more thing to do, isn't it? Hope you find an improvement somehow.

I agree that you should be wearing both hearing aids. My advisor also suggested that I should tell my house insurers about them. I'm sure it varies with providers, but my initial cost of the aids includes any servicing and visits for several years (4 or 5, can't remember).

Go back for a checkup /service and they may be able to advise.

Thank you all for your comments, the question was however, why has my hearing suddenly got worse. I am not accepting that I am running down, I believe there is a reason. As for wearing both hearing aids, I am not daft, of course I should but as mentioned if they fall off my ear, I can't keep going back to the NHS for a replacement. All NHS Hearing aids have to balance on your ear? I lead an active live yoga/tap dancing, which means I am jumping around and it is so easy to lose one or the other. I just want to know why, could it be possible that my thyroid medication isn't where it should be or maybe my supplements are not balanced...

Hi Margo, a serious radio programme some time ago explained that hearing loss is greatly reduced if we wear hearing aids and increases faster if we don't. Hope that helps though I'm sorry I don't have an answer to not losing them. One of my yoga students paid privately for hers and the difference in her hearing was astonishing. For a year I had been shouting so that she could hear, at her first Yoga class having had the hearing aids fitted she said to me, "Don't shout at me!"!!! You can imagine how we all laughed. She said the cost was well worth it but that all depends on how well off one is, doesn't it? Best of luck finding a solution.

Thank you for your interesting reply. I am just back from having my ears syringed, which has made no difference at all. I am now going to have to resort to wearing both hearing aids. It has made me think about paying privately, I was wondering if you wouldn't mind asking your student where she got her aids, as I may have to look into this option.

I have just been watching a short video by Dr Eric Berg about hearing loss and it appears to have a lot to do with inflammation.....he recommends Sea Kelp, might give it a go.

"Since hypothyroidism can lead to hearing loss, include sea vegetables such as kelp, in your diet. These foods are high in iodine, a mineral that's necessary for good thyroid health. You can easily incorporate sea vegetables into soups, especially miso broth, or add them to a stir-fry with brown rice and tofu."

Thanks again.

I have emailed the yoga student to find out but it's possible she may not reply because I stopped teaching last year and moved away from where she lives. I have an idea it was Specsavers though. Thanks very much for the info on inflammation and ways to incorporate sea kelp into the diet. I have bought it in the past, then it just sat unopened in the kitchen cupboard. Soup sounds good, and stir fries too, that's really helpful :)

Thank you, the lead is helpful.

I am going through a rough time, not only do I have this sudden more severe hearing loss, I also have had last month excruciating leg pain that was diagnosed as calcific tendonitis, that seems a bit better now and I am walking again, now I have the same pain in my shoulder, so I am presuming it is the same. While researching the hearing loss connection with. thyroid, I also came across this:-

"People with hypoparathyroidism may be at risk of having calcium crystals form in their tendons — a condition called calcific tendonitis — which can cause joint pain and inflammation".

While having my thyroid removed, a parathyroid maybe more came out, accidentally and I have to take replacement supplements, so maybe this is leading me to where I want to go. I now believe the thyroid/parathyroids (maybe) are all connected to the issues of my leg and shoulder pain and hearing loss.

Now I have cracked it, I have to find out the best way to deal with it and quickly as I am getting very fed up with the pain and not hearing, I feel like an old biddy (which I am anyway!!)

Thank you again.

Hello Margo, old biddy! At least you still have your sense of humour. The pain sounds absolutely awful and hearing loss can make us feel disconnected, but it does sound as if you have found the cause. Thank goodness for your research. I hope that now you can resolve both problems and be back to your old self. I bet you're not old at all really.

Good morning, well it rather depends on what you consider old. I am pushing 71, and scrub up quite well. Can still do things, dance/yoga, and if pushed I can run...However the last 6 months with the pain I would be looking good if I was 90. (Painkillers and no sleep take their toll). I am determined to get better, and be more strict with the timing and volumes of supplements, as I think that is where I may have gone wrong.

You certainly don't sound as though you are 'running down' Margo . Worth checking thyroid levels though.

Thank you Nightingale, I am in denial that I am getting

older…..71 this year.

I was thinking about the lanyards you can get for securing spectacles, then wondered if there's something similar for hearing aids. A brief trawl through '****' searching for 'hearing aid accessories' and I found a security clip. Might be worth looking at. The blurb starts "NEVER MISPLACE YOUR HEARING AIDS AGAIN: Tired of having your hearing aids fall out of your ears only to get damaged or get lost!? "

Let me know if you want the link, but you'll probably find it and others yourself.

Keep on denying then! Quite a bit behind me still. Think it is probably thyroid levels. xx
