Diabetes Insipidus has changed name

Just for general interest - because we have seen occasional mentions of Diabetes Insipidus over the years.

Diabetes Insipidus (DI) has undergone a terminology change.

Central DI: Arginine Vasopressin Deficiency or AVP-D

Nephrogenic DI: Arginine Vasopressin Resistance or AVP-R

The obvious reason is to reduce the opening for confusion with diabetes mellitus.

(Can't help hoping that Pernicious Anaemia get sensibly renamed - that name causes no end of confusion.)

Any clever tricks to remember the two new identifiers? particularly the last letter. I'll have to go away and think about that.

I've heard of LADA! But know little of it.

Seems appropriate to consider also renaming:

Syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH)

For ADH is nothing other than Arginine Vasopressin.

SIAVP? Or, AVP-XS (excess syndrome)? AVP-OS (overload syndrome)?

Having everything related to AVP starting with the letters AVP- just seems so logical, so obvious.

I have a friend with this. They diagnosed as type 2 to start with. There are probably quite a lot of folk misdiagnosed to be honest.

I'm mid 50's so guess the LADA more likely. I really didn't realise that diabetes seems to be a spectrum of diseases, only having heard of 1 and 2 (and considering some of the others I have heard of as not really diabetes).

Bloods next week. Not had them done for a while as I considered I was getting medicalised and not getting anything out of it.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but I wish I'd read this earlier today before I had a chat with my GP and asked him if I could have Diabetes Insipidus. He insisted (in the way that makes you feel you're being neurotic), that I am NOT DIABETIC! 🙄

I guess he started to hear the first word, assumed, and possibly even started to reply before the second word had reached him. Indeed, I think that if you start to speak you literally stop hearing.

Yep! I shall see how my symptoms go, and if needs be will phrase it differently and ask for my anti-diuretic hormone to be checked.... and not mention the D word 😆
