Hi, I ve just for my bloods back from the GP and my b12 is high at 1280 (range 197-771), it states the reason for this may be supplements or fortified food but i don't have either. Liver results look fine..Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum

Are you hypothyroid?

On levothyroxine?

If yes what dose levothyroxine are you currently taking

When were thyroid and vitamin levels last tested

Bloods should be retested 6-8 weeks after each dose change or brand change in levothyroxine

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested.

Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least once year minimum

About 90% of primary hypothyroidism is autoimmune thyroid disease, usually diagnosed by high thyroid antibodies

Autoimmune thyroid disease with goitre is Hashimoto’s

Autoimmune thyroid disease without goitre is Ord’s thyroiditis.

Both are autoimmune and generally called Hashimoto’s.

Low vitamin levels are extremely common when hypothyroid, especially with autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto’s or Ord’s thyroiditis)

20% of autoimmune thyroid patients never have high thyroid antibodies and ultrasound scan of thyroid can get diagnosis

In U.K. medics hardly ever refer to autoimmune thyroid disease as Hashimoto’s (or Ord’s thyroiditis)

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Are you currently taking any vitamin supplements at all

If yes, what exactly

When hypothyroid we can have falsely high B12

Known as Paradoxical B12 deficiency

if you have paradoxical B12 deficiency you’d have symptoms of low B12 despite apparently high B12 levels
