I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism several years ago. I also suffer from a painful anal fissure. I see from my research that the 2 maybe connected. Can anyone shed any light on this? Much appreciated…,

Welcome to the group.

Many symptoms can be connected to low thyroid levels. Do you have any results to share with us?

constipation is extremely common hypothyroid symptom

Is your hypothyroidism adequately treated

How much levothyroxine are you currently taking

Do you always get same brand levothyroxine at each prescription

Please add most recent thyroid and vitamin results and ranges

What’s the reason for your hypothyroidism

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 tested

plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested at least once

Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least once year minimum

About 90% of primary hypothyroidism is autoimmune thyroid disease, usually diagnosed by high thyroid antibodies

Autoimmune thyroid disease with goitre is Hashimoto’s

Autoimmune thyroid disease without goitre is Ord’s thyroiditis.

Both are autoimmune and generally called Hashimoto’s.

Low vitamin levels are extremely common when hypothyroid, especially with autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto’s or Ord’s thyroiditis)

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Anal fissures are almost always caused by constipation. As we know constipation is a very common hypothyroid symptom. Whilst taking advice from the forum administrators about your meds etc you need to take great care of this for your own comfort. Suppositories kept in the fridge should be used daily and after every bowel movement. Don’t skimp. There are suppositories available through the NHS but my favourite (have not had to use them for years and no idea if they are still available) are homeopathic and made by Weleda? Last time I looked they were a bit expensive. Cold packs and hot packs can be useful to sit on after a bowel movement. A boiled kettle down the toilet before a bowel movement to relax the anus can be helpful or a ‘potty’ to bring the steam nearer the affected area! I could not possibly get down to a potty now but needs must and a plastic basin might help. Too much info? Apologies.
