Ferinject to correct iron deficiency and strange clicking in throat when swollowing

So I had very bad iron deficiency anemia for some time now. Iron tablets did not work well. So an internist decided to give me ferinject 1000 to correct it. I had 30 minutes of iron infusion and I was fine. Then after couple of days my throat was swollen and I start to have strange sensations. It's like something there that pushing my throat to make that noise. Also when I put my hand there I can feel that clicking obstruction. It hurts. My voice is changing or I lose my voise. Doctors blamed it on reflux so I take gaviscon with no improvement. Mum have lumps on her thyroid but my ths and other test are OK. Anyone knows what is can be? Any clues? Thank you so much. Natalie.

Well you could be extremely anaemic BECAUSE your thyroid is struggling

Thyroid needs GOOD Vitamin Levels to work well

Any obvious reason for being extremely anaemic

Vegetarian, vegan, heavy periods?

Have you had vitamin D, folate, B12 levels tested too

What were your most recent thyroid and iron/ferritin results

Thyroid- TSH, Ft4 and Ft3 plus BOTH Thyroid antibodies

Thyroid Peroxidase and Thyroglobulin antibodies

Always test thyroid levels early morning ideally just before 9am

Presumably your mum has autoimmune thyroid disease and is on levothyroxine

Approx how old are you?

I have been on iron tablets 4 years but levels are still not good. I have never been offered injections. But I guess there would be some side effects. Hopefully your Dr or consultant can advise. Have you looked up the infusion info for the one you had.

Sounds like you may have had a bit of an allergic reaction to the Ferinject. It’s rare with these newer drugs but can happen. Did you get a patient information leaflet with it? I’m surprised with throat swelling your doctors didn’t mention that or treat you for that - was it the medic who administered it that you saw? I assume you’re not in UK as we don’t use the term Internist.

This is a long shot because it is a rare occurrence - but worth investigating because some people experience the clicking sound you are speaking about.

There is something called “Eagle Syndrome” - an elongated styloid process. I ended up finding out about having it - and ultimately needed surgery.

There is a forum called “Living with Eagle” that is extremely helpful - just like this site.

Wishing you well. 🌻
