Is it possible to go from hypo to hyper

Im curious if someone like myself who has had thyroid cancer and now has recurrence could start having issues going from hypo to hyper?

I have no new thyroid test (Im worried about mentioning this to Endo) my recurrence has grown larger past several months and now has spread to my clavicle area the lumps run along my neck strap (muscle) Endo is reluctant to treat based on thyroglobulin always being low (Im not keen on RAI) but what’s worrying me the most and the most confusing is one day having hypo issues and the next day having hyper issues …. Can recurrence cause you to go between both ? My meds are the same.

Can you provide links to articles talking about this?

Hi Batty1

First of all, big hugs—it sounds like you’ve had an awful time lately. x

I’ve had a look back through recent posts and see that this is the first time you’ve mentioned recurrence of thyroid cancer—is this “official”? Has that been formally diagnosed? If so, it seems a bit odd that your doctor is reluctant to treat.

I also see that you had Covid not that long ago and also that you were severely iron deficient.

I’ve written about this before but Covid knocked me for 6 (not sure if they translates to you guys in the US—it’s a cricket term about how hard and far a ball is hit!). It took around 3 months to start feeling very much better and up to that point any exertion left me feeling awful for 2 or 3 days afterwards.

And low iron levels tend to make it trickier for your body to tolerate T3. I suspect it’s to do with cortisol levels.

Have you had any recent thyroid blood tests? If you’re worried about how your endo might react to them, could you pay out of pocket again?

Without recent test results you’re just left guessing at the cause of the symptoms you have. To answer your question about whether recurrence could cause hyper symptoms—yes it could. Regrowth of thyroid tissue could mean you’re making thyroid hormone again. But do you definitely have recurrence? Or could those bumps be something else—swollen lymph nodes for example?

I know you’ve not had much luck with endos—I think many of us know exactly how you feel about that—but with this sort of thing it’s really important to try to find out what’s really going on.

I 100% have recurrence been dealing with this for a while only difference between first diagnosis and now is the growing lump and now swinging between what I feel is hypo to hyper and the reason my Endo has not dealt with this is partly my fault and the fact that my Thyroglobulin is undetectable although he did mention at last appointment its possible you have a gene that makes thyroglobulin undetectable (no idea what he is talking about) actually had undetectable thyroglobulin levels when diagnosed with pap cancer originally so Im not surprised at all …. My body does not follow standard protocols never has and never will which is probably why my body goes off the rails before any doctor will except something is wrong had this issue my entire life … Im definitely going to retest my thyroid I have to request blood work and dreading bringing up my growing lump to Endo so I can get a sooner US and I don’t want to mention to him that Im swinging between hypo and hyper (don’t want him to reduce my meds) the hyper swing brings me a lot of anxiety and Hypo brings me a lot exhaustion and Im having issue with sugar every test my doc gives me says Im fine no sugar issues (I can’t eat any bread products it absolutely dumps my sugar and leaves me rattling inside) not sure if the thyroid issues can cause this.

Its been 2 months since my covid and only issue that’s lingering is smell and taste … slowly they are returning except now all I smell is cigarette smoke (no one in my house smokes) it gives me migraines awful and I guess Im still anemic (supplementing) feeling ok no breathlessness.
