I have a MRI scan on my lower spine booked this week. As this is not involving the neck area does anyone know if it could have any effect on the thyroid gland.

I've had a number of MRI's over time and tbh never given it a second thought. I'm sure if there was an issue they either wouldn;t do MRI's or give warnings etc. I don't think you've got anything to worry about.

You'll be fine. They are quite used to nervous people and usually at pains to put your mind at rest. Hope it goes well.

As there’s no radiation involved I don’t think it’s an issue, unless contrast is used.

what would the contrast do?

I can’t see anything in there that talks about thyroid problems and contrast, maybe I’ve missed something..?

No - I don't think there is anything specific to thyroid. But there are general issues with MRI contrast such as its use in people with kidney issues.

That sort of contrast would be used for a CT - not an MRI. (As I understand.)

Yea seems to be what the article suggests.

A few years ago I went for a chest x-rray and asked the nurse for a neck guard to protect my thyroid as I'd read about this somewhere. The only one they had was too big for my neck so they didn't bother!
