I’ve been taking too much T3

please can someone help. I’m taking 50 mcg levo and 10 mcg lio (2x 5 mcg) daily. However I’ve just checked my meds and realised for the last month I’ve been taking 2 x 10 mcg per day T3. When I collected my prescription from the hospital I had a mix of 10 mcg and 5 mcg - I must have mixed them up. I have an appointment with the Endo tomorrow - luckily my last nhs blood test was before the mix up. My last Medichecks blood test would have been while taking 20 mcg T3. Firstly does this explain why TSH is only 0.11 mU/L and why TPA is 156 IU/ml? Hopefully the NHS blood test shows better levels. Secondly should I tell the Endo tomorrow? I feel like a complete idiot and I’m normally very careful about my meds. Thank you.

Been there; done that! And felt an idiot too!

Ignore the last medichecks results and go back to what you should be on. Tell the endo if you want or not. You will be discussing your treatment based on your NHS blood results before the mistake so it will not affect that discussion.

Just get back on track and focus on your prescribed dose and NHS results for the endo.

Thank you Lalatoot. That’s very reassuring. I may have to tell the Endo as I’ve managed to wolf down an extra month’s worth of T3 by doubling up the dose!! Not sure if he’ll be keeping track of what he’s prescribed. Thanks again.

It may or it may not explain it. What was your TSH on 10 mcg?

It will have nothing to do with your TPA level, though. That just means that you have Hashi's. Did you not know that before?

Hi greygoose. Thank you for your reply. No idea what my levels were on 10 mcg - the Endo will give me those tomorrow hopefully. I had that blood test around 6 weeks ago. I have Hashi’s - also I’ve just checked a blood test from December and TPA was even higher. I’m going to blame all of this on brain fog!! Thanks again.

You're welcome. :)

I wouldn’t mention it to the endo personally, I’d worry they’d use it as an excuse to take the T3 away.

Did you feel any difference on 20mcg vs. 10mcg?

Hi. I’ve felt very anxious. Every muscle and joint ache I’ve had for the past couple of years has disappeared. Also I’ve probably only had two nights full sleep in the past month. To be honest, I thought I was going a bit crazy as I felt odd but couldn’t understand why. I would definitely be happy to reduce the dose but to somewhere between 10 mcg and 20 mcg. I’m desperately hoping the Endo doesn’t stop the T3. Thanks again

bless you. What a nice easy fix!

In some ways, the most important question is whether you feel OK?

Do you feel over-medicated?

Hi. Now I know why I’ve been feeling so odd I would say I was definitely over medicated.

Glad you have a (possible? likely?) explanation. :-)

And, being positive, you now have some experience to base future odd feelings! (You obviously already had the experience of not having enough/the right thyroid hormone levels!)

Hi. Yes indeed. I’ve been struggling to get the right balance so I think somewhere between what I’ve been prescribed and what I took inadvertently would be about right. Just hope I can persuade the Endo tomorrow. Thanks again

We all make mistakes! My personal opinion - tell your endo. He needs to have the correct info and not be missing bits out. For him it's a bit like doing a jigsaw puzzle with bits missing. He can ignore anything you tell him it if he wants to, but at least you've told him.

If the extra has made you feel better then he might let you keep the higher dose - you never know!

Hi. Thank you. I think I need to get my argument straight for tomorrow. I’d settle for a slightly lower dose. Thanks again.
