North Star accord

Hi,

Has anyone experienced any problems with north star accord? I’ve been taking this for 11 days now & before I take it on a morning I feel ok but then about half an hour after taking it, my body feels like a dead weight (heavy) for about 8 hours.

I mentioned this to the endocrinologist and he said its possibly a side effect to the medication and keep going it will subside. Up to now it hasn’t.

has anyone else experienced this? I am not sure whether to keep going on this brand or change.

thanks all

Northstar is made by different manufacturers depending on tablet dose. The 25mcg tablets are made by Teva and the fillers in them cause the most problems for folks.

Assuming you are meaning exactly what you have said, there should be no difference at all between Accord packaged as Accord, as Northstar or even as Almus.

If you feel there is a difference, please put in a Yellow Card report.

Yellow Cards are about the only way we can get questions like this seen by the MHRA and the companies. Not promising anything for an individual who files a report, but if everyone who has an issue does so, it can make an impact.

Hi

When I was diagnosed I got Northstar, it gave me terrible IBS symptoms, bloating, cramping etc. I then changed to Mercury but that made me itch. I then went on Accord and have been fine on that ever since. I get it as a named brand. Weird that I can tolerate one but not the other when they're meant to be the same.

Sometimes different brands have different fillers or ingredients (called excipients), where people can react to and unfortunately not all levothyroxine tablets are the same, they may have the same amount of levothyroxine in them, but differ in the composition of other ingredients. These ingredients can also have an influence on how well you absorb the medicine.

I had a bad experience with Glenmark 100 mcg levothyroxine a while back (hypothyroid symptoms came back after two weeks of taking them - I have reported this to the yellow card scheme already and been in touch with their global med info department), so I ask now to be given the ones made by accord only.

Something strange happened to me with Northstar 50mcg a few weeks ago.

I always take the same and get 3months worth of them delivered by LloydsDirect instead of going to the local pharmacy. I was doing ok as per usual but one pack made the base of my neck, top of chest, come out in a red itchy rash all round. I didn’t connect it to my Levo and just kept taking antihistamines.

Then I suddenly remembered that the same thing had happened to me a few years ago when I collected my prescription from Asda, instead of giving me Actavis they gave me another brand that I hadn’t had before. I even posted about it here.

Anyway, as soon as the penny dropped, I stopped taking them and opened a fresh pack from my new delivery. Amazingly the rash and redness completely disappeared! I checked the packs and the only difference was the batch number. The strange thing was that I had been on the last pack of the previous delivery and none of the others had affected me at all, it was only that last pack.

I hope you put in a Yellow Card report?

I know that when I pick up my three packs each month, they can be from one, two or three batches. Impossible to predict.

Your story highlights that it can be a good idea to at least keep outer packaging going back several months. That enables you to check batch numbers - if they have changed or not. Might be an idea to write on the packaging when you started taking that packet. (This is a general point and not meant to point a finger at you. :-) I have no idea if you kept the packaging!)

No I didn’t, to tell the truth it never occurred to me, but from your reply I shall start keeping a record of the batch numbers. I had checked the new delivery and they were all the same.

Thank you.
