Help on Liothyronine

Dalias profile image
4 Replies

Hello,

I have just seen a private consultant and he has prescribed me with Liothyronine to complement the Levothyroxine I take.

He told me to get it abroad as it is very expensive here. I am about to go to France but unfortunately his prescription will not be ready on time for me to purchase it there.

I have 2 questions:

1 - Is is possible to get it without a prescription in France?

2- Can anyone please recommend a reputable source in France or Europe that can send it to me?

Thank you

Welcome to the forum

Private prescription enables access to Thybon Henning 20mcg tablets via specialist U.K. pharmacies for 50-60p per tablet

Typical dose of T3 is 2 or 3 x 5mcg T3 per day

Cutting 20mcg tablet into 1/4’s is by far the cheapest option

How much has endocrinologist prescribed

Before considering adding T3

What are your most recent thyroid and vitamin results

Which brand of levothyroxine are you currently taking

How much levothyroxine are you currently taking

Bloods should be retested 6-8 weeks after each dose change or brand change in levothyroxine

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested.

Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least once year minimum

Do you have autoimmune thyroid disease

About 90% of primary hypothyroidism is autoimmune thyroid disease, usually diagnosed by high thyroid antibodies

Autoimmune thyroid disease with goitre is Hashimoto’s

Autoimmune thyroid disease without goitre is Ord’s thyroiditis.

Both are autoimmune and generally called Hashimoto’s.

Low vitamin levels are extremely common when hypothyroid, especially with autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto’s or Ord’s thyroiditis)

20% of autoimmune thyroid patients never have high thyroid antibodies and ultrasound scan of thyroid can get diagnosis

In U.K. medics hardly ever refer to autoimmune thyroid disease as Hashimoto’s (or Ord’s thyroiditis)

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally before 9am and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

What vitamin supplements are you currently taking

What were most recent vitamin results

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins
