dosing t3

Hi, I am taking t3, 5mcg with 75mcg levo in the morning and 5mcg teatime.

My question is, would it be ok for me to take the whole 10 mcg with my levo in the morning?

Yes some folks do better taking it all at once; others need to split. it is very much trial and error to see what suits you.

I took mine all at once, then I tried splitting it but found no benefit so I went back to once daily as it's easier. Give it a try, see what suits you best, we're all different :)

As others have suggested, it’s best to experiment and see what works best for you. Taking it all in one go works well for lots of members. Taking all thyroid meds on waking worked well for me for over a year, but I recently added an additional 5mcg T3 in the afternoon (I take 10mcg plus Levo in morning) and am (currently) finding this helpful.

Your dose is small so it will probably make little difference. I find the bedtime dose more helpful so you could try switching from teatime to bedtime to see if it helps.

We are all different

Personally I need 3 small doses per day

(and I split levothyroxine as two doses waking and bedtime)

As jimh111 says, last dose T3 at bedtime can significantly improve sleep

I started with 5mcg twice a day 8hrs apart. Then it was suggested to me on here that I take 10mcg in one go once a day. I went over medicated after a a couple of days. I had a blood test which proved this and I felt very weak. I went back to my previous regimen of 5mcg twice a day 8hrs apart and felt much better. We are all very different it would seem. For some people small 5mcg doses are enough to take their T3 levels quite high in blood ranges. When I was first diagnosed as a poor converter of Levothyroxine T4 to active T3 my percentage of T3 in my blood was only 8% which is very low. It’s amazing how just 5mcg can boost some peoples T3 levels and 10mcg in one dose can push you to over medication. I don’t believe 5mcg is a small dose as it all depends on individuals hormone makeup. I take Sanofi ThyBon Henning 20mcg and cut into quarters. Maybe some brands are not as strong as others too. I’m not sure as some brands are unlicensed in the U.K.

I find the opposite - so 5 mcg does nothing for me, but 10 mcg at once makes a marked improvement. Curiously, 10 mcg at once on top of 100 mcg levo makes me feel dire, but 10 mcg on 75 mcg of levo seems good. All very odd, and shows how different we all are yet again!

I think I'll try t3 10mcg with levo 75mcg in the morning for a month or so and see how I am.....My next question is, what should I do when my next blood test is due in 3 months, go back to original dose of 5mcg am and pm or stick with 10mcg at am?

Once again I would like to thank everyone who has offered advice to me, Thyroid UK has very probably saved my life

Just for the one day before your test, go back to splitting into 2 x 5mcg and take the second 5mcg 8-12 hours before the blood draw.

From Paul Robinson

"In the human body, the biological half-life of T4 is approximately seven days, which means a patient can take their entire daily dosage of synthetic T4 in one go, without any issues, because it is used up relatively slowly.

In contrast, the biological half-life of T3 is believed to be twenty-four hours. However, a single dose of T3 is rapidly absorbed and reaches peak circulating concentration in just two to three hours (2.5 hours is typical), after ingestion.

Blood serum concentrations of T3 may remain somewhat elevated for six to eight hours. After this, blood serum concentrations decline again, unless another dose of T3 is ingested."

Thanks, im thinking I may need a slight increase, but for now I am taking t3 and t4 together in morning, perhaps adding t3 at teatime at a later date
