Florah pennyannie gave you helpful info in your first post regarding antibodies which is worth reading again. As far as we can understand you only had tpo antibodies tested. These antibodies are present in both graves disease (hyper) and hashimotos (hypo).

Hashimotos often starts with a phase that mimics hyper with low TSH and over range ft3 and ft4. This is transient and the true hypothyroid results then show. So many folks have gone hyper to hypo with hashimotos.

It is not unknown for medics to misinterpret blood results and wrongly treat a patient with carbimazole for graves when they are actually hypo.

Your initial results suggest hashimotos more than graves as the FT4 and FT3 for graves are usually very much higher. You only had tpo antibodies tested which are common to both conditions.

To test for graves you need tsi and Trab antibodies tested

The physical symptoms of both conditions can be very similar.

I yo-yoed between the two . My diagnosis - which was very late in the day - was atropic (no goitre) autoimmune thyroiditis but initially they thought I had Graves’ disease but I went from hyper to very hypo in about a week . It wasn’t very nice, I was very poorly by this stage. It’s quite unusual and starts like Graves disease but eventually the thyroid gland is destroyed and hypothyrodism takes over. As the thyroid dies stores of thyroxine are dumped in the bloodstream causing the hyper episodes. Rollercoaster hell that’s what I’d call it.

I had mixed symptoms for decades, always cold but very thin, heart pains, anxiety, terrible depression, I itched for Britain if not the world. I had shed loads of other symptoms dismissed as the menopause 🙄 In the later stages I began to hallucinate and go completely haywire yelling and shouting and then crying hysterically then thinking omg what the hell was that all about? And off it would go again. I had terrible insomnia and used to stay awake for two days then try and sleep . I’d be awake all night and then want to crash at 6am but I had to go to work - Lord knows how I managed to work in that condition! I got improvements with t4 thyroid hormone therapy but never felt properly better until I tried NDT which has t3 in. All my relatives with thyroid problems have been fine on Levothyroxine so I drew the short straw there.

Hope the above is helpful to you.

TSH110 thank you for sharing your journey. It’s so challenging isn’t it 😰😨. If you don’t have it, you won’t understands

It can be really tough but good you are here there are lots of really good knowledgeable people on the forum who will support you. Without them I would not have regained my health.

You may find Dr Tania Smith’s blog of interest. This one explains a about the different types of autoimmune thyroid disease and all the different antibodies involved. It can be hard getting your head around it all but slowly it starts to make better sense. She has the same one as I do.
