Well I’m reading conflicting information on this fruit, which is plentiful and tasty at present. Some view it as beneficial, others say avoid. What’s the verdict from ThyroidUK/Health Unlocked users. I’m now six weeks into treatment and my Levo 50. Had a couple of reasonable days, but mostly days and nights I’d rather forget.

Strawberries on the menu?
In my opinion, like everything else - no problem in moderation, they're only around for a very few weeks so enjoy a few whilst you can.
If you have histamine intolerance, you may choose to avoid strawberries. Otherwise, no reason not to enjoy them as far as I'm aware.
At one point on my thyroid journey I gave up gluten, dairy, nightshades and foods high in histamine…..& got my self in a terrible muddle. My advice is to only trial excluding one food group at once & monitor any symptoms/ benefits. For me, only gluten gives me adverse affects, so Im going to enjoy a bowl of strawberries & cream this weekend!
My Grannie used to say, " A little bit of what you fancy does you good!"
So, providing you have no known allergies... enjoy.
I'm watching our strawberry patch and looking forward to enjoying a good crop...soon!
It takes time for levo to settle into the system and it's not unusual to feel worse for a few days after each increase before you reach your therapeutic dose ( been there) so hang on in there.
So enjoy all you can meantime, and I'd say a bowl of strawberries and cream is a good start!
Totally agree with your grannie!
The reason some people say to avoid strawberries is probably because they are goitrogens. Goitrogens act by impeding the uptake of iodine by the thyroid. But, as you are now on thyroid hormone replacement, you thyroid doesn't need much iodine, so this is not likely to affect you. Besides, what they never tell you is that you'd have to eat one hell of a lot of strawberries for them to have any goitrogenic effect at all! I love strawberries, but I could never eat that many! lol
So, eat what you fancy, as long as it agrees with you, that's what I say.
I was brought up in a greengrocers but never liked strawberries nor does my son. If you like them eat them they are only available for a few weeks, most importantly wash all fruit and vegetables first. The latest attack of Hepatitis A, causing liver failure in children in the US has found organic strawberries to blame.
