Suppressed TSH

When I switched from Naturethroid to Armour, I had to raise my dose in order to feel the same on Armour as I had on NT. The same dose of Armour was not enough. I had a flare of hypo symptoms until the Armour dose was raised. On the higher dose, where I feel the same as I did on the lower dose of NT, my TSH is now suppressed. I tried lowering my dose back down and felt awful.

My FT3 is is 4.1 (2.3-4.4) and my FT4 is 1.4 (.86-1.76) so I'm not hyperthyroid. TSH is now 0.005. It was always around 0.2 on Naturethroid.

My dr doesn't mind too much but did say she wished it was a smidge higher.

Is suppressed TSH okay? I have read such mixed information.

Some say there’s a slight risk of osteoporosis but equally there’s a risk with not enough medication so for my money I’d rather just feel well enough. Then you can tolerate weight bearing exercise to keep those bones and joints healthy even if it’s at home yoga

This is how I feel about it, too. Like me being hypo and all my cells suffering would be worse, right? Thanks for your reply!

Hello Luna :

On NDT you will likely have a low suppressed TSH and this does not matter :

Your T4 will likely look a bit low ( compared to being on T4 only medication ) BUT your T3 should be proportionately higher and what to track.

Wellness is more important than where your TSH sits, once on any form of thyroid hormone replacement.

The TSH was originally introduced as a diagnostic tool to help confirm a diagnosis of hypothyroidism.

The TSH was never intended to be used once the patient was taking any form of thyroid hormone replacement as then you must track on the T3 and T4 levels and on NDT a good level of T3 is key to your restoring your health.

Okay, this has been how I've been tending to think, as well. If I am having hypo symptoms, that's not healthy. So being asymptomatic and feeling good has to be a good thing for overall health. Thank you for your reply!

Hi, my tsh has been suppressed for many years since an increase to T3 finally made me well. 18 months ago I became very hypo due to being prescribed HRT. My tsh remained suppressed.

Many doctors and endos, from my experience really don't like it. I ve been told many times to reduce meds, to raise tsh as it causes bone problems. It as just scare mongery.

My tsh will never be any thing other than suppressed. Very likely yours now won't be either. It's just something that happens when you take T3.

You are lucky that your doctor knows more than most about T3 and the thyroid!

Hello Luna, I had to switch fro NatureThroid to Armour as well. At first, I was on a similar dose but felt very under medicated. I increased my meds, but still didn’t feel great. Then, the kind people on this site suggested that I lower my meds as it looked like I was over medicated. Which I did. And now I feel great at the old dose. My point being, that it took a good 6 months for my body to get used to the Armour.

That is very interesting. So it took more Armour at first to make you feel normal, but then you were able to drop back down later? I will keep this in mind! Thank you!

Sorry if I confused you. I increased the Armour because I still felt hypo, and wasn’t sure if I should increase some more, but the folks on here said to decrease because my labs showed that I was over medicated. Which I did, and started to feel better. So my feeling is, that I should have hung on with the original dose for a while longer. I guess being over medicated has some of the same symptoms as under.
