Antibodies

Been told I have hypothyroidism today as have the antibodies (don’t know levels as it’s not shown on my blood results yet) but not on anything and that I just need a blood test in 12 months , as is that why my t4 level has reduced again and she said it’s nothing to do with that.

Is that normal to just check it after 12 months ?

"Not currently got diagnosis but dad had hypothyroidism.

TSH 3.75 now was 5.95 in February and 1.95 in December (normal range 0.35-4.94)

T4 - 10.4 now and was 11.5 in February (normal range 9.0-19.0)

Feel terrible but doctors are saying they are normal except the tsh 5.95 in February

I had my test in afternoon (as only appointment I can get at my gps)"

So yes .. the antibodies confirm you have autoimmune hypothyroidism , and so they now know your thyroid levels are quite likely to get slowly worse (over time) , meaning you are quite likely to end up with TSH going over range again (and staying there) and you fT4 falling gradually lower until it is under range ..... BUT.... because your TSH has gone back in range , the NHS are not allowed to treat you with Levothyroxine yet (Because Not everyone with positive thyroid antibodies will actually become hypothyroid (TSH over range and fT4 under range) .. and not everyone with positive thyroid antibodies and slightly high TSH will ever feel any symptoms , and because sometimes high TSH is just temporary and gets better ... so they have to wait until they are sure it really does need treatment for life .

The positive thyroid antibodies (TPOab) are why the guidelines tell them to keep checking every year .

But because TSH is now back in range they can't treat you yet. Labs won't usually run a repeat TSH for at least 3 months after the last one was 'normal ' ( even if the GP asks for one)

If your blood test had been first thing in the morning instead of in the afternoon ,it would have a been a bit higher than 3.75 ... it's impossible to say 'how much higher' ...maybe just a tiny bit or maybe enough to be just over range again.

Sorry this will all be very depressing to hear when you feel so crap already ..... The quickest way i can suggest you get another test is to go and hassle the GP again about some "worsening symptoms" once 3 months have passed and make absolutely certain that the next blood test is done as early as possible in the morning , preferably 9am.

If they say they have no tests at that time , say you "can't get there after 9am due to work commitments and you don't mind waiting until a week or so later .." .

They need to have TWO over range TSH tests taken 3 months apart before they can treat you .

Hopefully they may not insist on both the over range results being 'next to each other' , since they know for certain you have autoimmune thyroid disease .

In the meantime . follow up on anything you can do to improve vit d, vit b12, folate, ferritin etc from your previous post.
