Gluten free bread

For those on gf diet I would like to tell you of the lovely gf bread I now make .

My brother has the same issue snd introduced me to it .

Dove Freee white or brown bread flour . . The recipe is on the packet and apart from using one tablespoonful less of the oil ( I use Rapeseed,) It’s fine .

It’s the first time I have enjoyed gf bread it’s crusty and my husband favours it above bought ordinary shop bread , even the more expensive type.

I raise it in the loaf tin in a bowl of very warm water which takes about an hour ,

I estimate it cost less than a £1 ,

This is great to hear Gcart 😊I’ve not had much success making GF bread in my bread machine, so will try to do this the traditional way. It is more cost effective to make your own as some supermarket loaves are over £3 each.

Gcart in reply to Buddy195

Yes. It’s easier in a way because the mix makes a very thick batter ( no kneeling) Just pour it into a bread tin . Make sure it’s deep enough though it rises to a large loaf size .

Do you follow Becky Excell at all? She has tips for using a bread making machine on her FB group, it's possibly on her blog too.

And the bread recipes in her books are awesome, real game changers.

I will definitely have a look; thanks Fluffysheep 👍

No problem!

I'd recommend Becky to anyone that is gluten free. Her recipes are amazing, and she is a lovely lady who has done so much for the GF community.

I have failed miserably with my bread maker too

I buy warburtons gluten free tiger loaf and it's £3.50, and about half the size of normal tiger loaf. I wonder if prices vary in different parts of the country

Thanks for posting and I would just love a slice of fresh bread straight from the oven. Of course have to let it cool down a little.

Thanks for posting that Gcart 😊 you’ve definitely sold it for me. I’m off out tomorrow to buy myself a bag of Dove Freee brown bread flour. I hardly ever eat bread because as you no doubt know GF bread isn’t all that nice and it can be pretty expensive.

Asda do a good gf bloomer slices and Tesco do a decent brown bloomer. Asda 85p ish and Tesco £2.50 ish.

Hi can you tell me where you can buy the dove flour?Do you mix it in a bowl with oil then put it in a loaf tin?

When it comes to baking I’m hopeless but this sounds quite straightforward.

Can you kindly post the recipe as I have gf flour having bought it in bulk.

Thanks for the tip, will give it a try!

My mother in law has tried a few different from scratch GF bread recipes but all very faffy, expensive and not very good results. I'll share the tip with her as well.

Apparently, the issue with bread makers and GF premixes or recipes is there's usually a double rise. New machines now include a GF loaf option which just has 1 rise which works much better.

It is a good time to stock up on all flour as it may well become scarce very soon 🌻

Hello, your bread looks great! I am coeliac with hashi's but am dairy and egg intolerant, do you need eggs for this bread? I get the 'just' make bread on prescription but am willing to try my own.

Gcart profile image
Gcart in reply to hedwigswing

No. It says 2egg whites OR 20g. Gram flour

I think you are right. I think I’ll go buy a packet of gf flour for the recipe. Thanks for spotting this, I thought Dove farm was all GF but I was clearly wrong

No it’s Gluton free.

Hi. From what I can see on their website, not all flour/products in the Doves Farm range are gluten free. You need to select that specific range. All their flour is organic though.

Thank you Gcart for this recipie , really miss good bread since going gluten free. Can I just clarify with you , do you mean you use one less tablespoon of oil than the recipe states. ?

Gcart profile image
Gcart in reply to Golli

Yes The recipe is 6tablesooons of oil I did cut down to 5 I might even try 4 .I not concerned as I use rapeseed oil snd it’s supposed to be a healthy oil 🙂

2 points: This is likely to be high carb & the oil being from seeds not healthy. I wonder if coconut oil can be used.

helvella profile image
helvellaAdministratorThyroid UK in reply to RaghvirS

Coconut is a seed! Albeit a very big one.

RaghvirS profile image
RaghvirS in reply to helvella

Its not a grass seed; sunflower, rapeseed etc are.

helvella profile image
helvellaAdministratorThyroid UK in reply to RaghvirS

I'm sorry, but I simply do not get what specifically is different between grass/sunflower/rapeseed and coconut. What property do they have that coconut doesn't? Or the other way round?

Wiki lists a wide range of seed oils:

plant oil

Almond Almond oil

Argan Argan oil

Borage Borage oil

Castor oil plant Castor oil

Cherry Cherry pit oil

Coconut Coconut oil

Corn Corn oil

Cotton Cottonseed oil

Flax Linseed oil

Grape Grape seed oil

Hemp Hemp oil

Jojoba Jojoba oil

Macadamia Macadamia oil

Mango Mango butter

Mustard plant Mustard oil

Neem Neem oil

Oil palm Palm kernel oil

Rapeseed Rapeseed oil / Canola oil

Safflower Safflower oil

Sesame Sesame oil

Shea Shea butter

Sunflower Sunflower oil

Tonka bean Tonka bean oil

Tung Tung oil

Hedgeree profile image
Hedgeree in reply to RaghvirS

From my understanding rapeseed oil is a highly refined oil unless you go for a cold pressed one. It is also naturally high in sulphites so I avoid it as it causes me to be wheezy.

Hedgeree profile image
Hedgeree in reply to RaghvirS

Hi RaghvirS,

I'm curious also why you say oil being from seeds not healthy? I would have thought it depends on how much it is processed and if it is cold processed etc.

Hi Gcart, thank you so much for your post!!!

I never put much faith in recipes printed on sides of packets but how wrong I was on this occasion! I have used the recipe twice already since you posted it and it’s been FABULOUS. Crusty, light and dead simple. And makes fantastic toast. OMG I never knew how much I missed proper toast!

Slight variant from me: I use ‘No Egg Egg Replacer For Baking (Orgran)’ instead of eggs, just because I find it more practical.

Thank again!😋

Gcart profile image
Gcart

I know. I use gram flour because it’s a cupboard item . Just made one now snd can stop eating the crusty bread with home made jam on it 🙂🙂

Trouble is my husband loves it too . So I got him to help with the process today 👍👍
