Here is the BNF list of Levothyroxine prices, assuming it is the prices you want:

bnf.nice.org.uk/medicinal-f...

ThyroidUK has a list of the different brands and if you click on each one it will show the list of ingredients:

If you need Mercury Pharma brand, get GP to add note to all future prescriptions

Print this link out for pharmacy

gov.uk/drug-safety-update/l...If a patient reports persistent symptoms when switching between different levothyroxine tablet formulations, consider consistently prescribing a specific product known to be well tolerated by the patient. If symptoms or poor control of thyroid function persist (despite adhering to a specific product), consider prescribing levothyroxine in an oral solution formulation.

NHS pays a fixed price for levothyroxine

If pharmacy can get cheaper brand they make more profit

Teva often seems to be the favourite/cheaper

Large chains like Boots and Lloyds only want to supply brand they have a good deal with

Small independent pharmacies are often more helpful

Slow Dragon Am I correct in reading then that the NHS pays the same for all brands of Levothyroxine regardless of the name... However the pharmacy are the ones that are looking to make a bigger profit margin on the specific brand drug they dispense? Because it is a small pharmacy and the locum is saying that the Mercury pharma brand is expensive so if that is not the case I am going to go in there and be very annoyed that he is lying to me before I challenge him I need to have my facts correct. Is Mercury Pharma the same as Eltroxin? as I can't find Mercury pharma on the BNF list of cost

Yes. They are made by Advanz, you will see Advanz on the list.

Eltroxin 100microgram tablets (Advanz Pharma)

Levothyroxine sodium 100microgram tablets (Advanz Pharma)

also on the list for 50mcg and 25mcg.

I thought as much but I wanted to check so confusing with all these generics

Pharmacies might be able to get all sorts of discounts and incentives for making sure they mostly order specific makes. And, quite possibly, that could apply across entirely different medicines.

But the NHS Drug Tariff prices are the same for all products of the same dosage.

The table of prices in the BNF are by supplier - which is NOT the same as brand. It is unutterably confusing,

I have created, and try to maintain, a document containing details of all thyroid hormone medicines in the UK and, in less detail, many others around the world.

Yes they get paid exactly the same for any brand

Look up prices online here

nhsbsa.nhs.uk/pharmacies-gp...

Currently

28 x 100mcg = 89p

28 x 50mcg = 90p

28 x 25mcg = 98p
