3.6cm thyroid nodule, fight to get it removed...

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone's been in a similar situation that can share some advice

I have a nodule on my thyroid that's 3.6cm, I've had FNA and all came back OK but since had an iodine uptake scan and it showed the nodule is hot and effectively has caused the healthy part of my thyroid to switch off. So I'm getting all the crappy symptoms like fatigue, achey limbs, night sweats, anxiety etc etc

I'm also having swallowing issues, I feel like food gets stuck for a few hours after I eat, taking paracetamol isn't great either, they feel like they get stuck on the way down.

My endo Dr sent me to ENT this month to discuss surgery but the ENT Dr was very dismissive about the feeling I have of food getting stuck. I feel like I now have a fight on my hands to get surgery. They've told me I need a CT scan to see further down my neck but I feel like this is just time wasting, I've already been waiting two years.

Anyone else had a similar experience?

I have >5cm solitary hot nodule. I have my history on my profile.

I’ve I taken low dose carbimazole for 3 years to bring FT4 & FT3 to normal range.

I was offered Radioactive iodine (RAI) to reduce thyroid but do not think it’s best course for me.

Swallowing a slight issue for me & ENT did an naso endoscopy and said “not to squashed in there” & Surgeon said he would remove lobe with nodule if RAI not logistically possible (I’m a carer, so isolation an issue) but it was assumed I would have RAI and I was discharged…..I would have to argue and fight for surgery.

I’m stable on carbimazole so unless that alters not doing anything irreversible.

What are your thyroid results the TSH FT4 & FT3. It might be the excess levels and suppression on remaining thyroid mean your levels are not out of normal range. Took many years (nearly 5) for my FT3 to go from borderline high to double range. I wasn’t told at time I discovered later.

If you are symptomatic it might be you need antithyroid to reduce levels.

This is what is so frustrating, I've never been offered medication for it and I don't know why. But to be honest I have a lump in my neck that shouldn't be there so would like it removed

Drs are usually keen to treat high levels. Your thyroid results are likely still within range. The nodule would be taking over the function of the thyroid.

Once we see what you results are we can comment further.

Only recently - after covid. I have a really terrible tightening front of throat up the sides. (Like a hand) Never had before felt very “thyroid like” & I had weird hyper symptoms.

Not had before so was odd.

Do get swollen tonsils & tonsils stones (yuck, I know) then throat can be sore, but not thyroid area.

You also need vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 levels tested

Night sweats often low B12

Aching limbs low vitamin D

Always test thyroid levels early morning

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

List of private testing options

Medichecks Thyroid plus antibodies and vitamins

Blue Horizon Thyroid Premium Gold includes antibodies, cortisol and vitamins by DIY fingerprick test

If you can get GP to test vitamins and antibodies then cheapest option for just TSH, FT4 and FT3

£29 (via NHS private service ) and 10% off down to £26.10 if go on thyroid uk for code

Yes I had the same in the UK I then moved to France and my thyroid was removed the same year. They did find cancer too which wasn;t expected either. Mine affected my breathing which was bad. I don't know how to help you further, sorry.

Thank you, this is interesting. Had they previously ruled out cancer with a biopsy?

Yes I had an FNA performed in the UK and nothing was found, only when it was removed it was found to have Papilary Cancer. The thing was, the lump had moved my Trachea so

I was finding it difficult to breathe but nothing was done.

Anyway I am find with no Thyroid I take NDT.

How odd that they didn't find anything on the FNA but did when they removed it

Well I had the FNA done in the UK by NHS. Nothing was every done to help me either. After moving to France in the same year I had the my thyroid removed by a Professor surgeon here in France the lump was then sent to the lab and papillary cancer was found.

What was your experience of the FNA ? I've got to have 1 too, I have a 600mm x 400mm nodule on my thyroid . Ultrasound didn't give an awful lot of info. Did you have to wait for the results of the FNA or do they tell you at the appointment ?

There are people on Youtube who claim to have the answer to shrinking thyroid nodules. I've never watched their videos, but until such time as the patient knows what kind of thyroid nodule they have I'm dubious about these generic claims. But it doesn't cost anything to watch Youtube, so it might be worth giving it a go. But double and triple check anything via other sources if you see anything you want to try.
