Living with congenital Hypothyroidism

My name is Amanda this is my experience.

I was born with Hypothyroidism, it has been with me all my life.

I recently discovered that cow's milk suppresses levothyroxine/synthroid if you are from USA, from working correctly so I changed to lacto free or oat milk.

I am now on 150mg of levothyroxine.

I have, since I was old enough to, learned how to read and comprehend about congenital hypothyroidism.

I have learned how it affects me throughout my life.

In order to help my GP, help me.

Welcome to the forum

Many of us here have had to find out about our condition in FAR more detail that our GP, becuase they do so little about thyroid (and nothing about nutrition) in their training and so many of them think that TSH is all that matters.

I'm assuming you don't feel tip-top, so I'd recommend you get FULL testing - either privately (you will see LOTS of posts here about private testing, and there are discounts on the main Thyroid UK site) - or from your GP, if you are lucky.

Full testing means: TSH, free T4, free T3, thyroid antibodies (unless you know these are high) and key nutrients - ferritin, folate, vit D and B12. I've had some success with my GP by saying that these are the tests recommended by Thyroid UK. Always always have an early morning fasting blood test, before 9am, when TSH is highest, and leave 24 hours from our last dose of levo (take the next straight afterwards) and ALWAYS get your actual results afterwards. Put the results here (with lab ranges after each, as these vary from lab to lab) and the lovely people here will help you to understand them.

And you can find lots of useful info on the main Thyroid UK site; posts and answers here; and helvella 's brilliant Vade Mecum [in saved posts] which includes a really helpful glossary to thyroid lingo.

Good luck x
