Need a test desperately

Hi there

I recently put a post on about my husband and several of you wonderful people out there suggested he go for private thyroid testing as he was on the very bottom figure of the parameters. There was only one test done the other thyroid figures blank.

Not getting anywhere with this except for his being told to lose weight which is half the problem. He has an CT Angiograph on Monday to see if he needs stenting on top of everything else.

I won't bore you all with his weight and symptoms again. I don't know where to turn for the private thyroid test. He is so run down now and dull and depressed it's awful.

How do I choose what company to go to ? I am worried some may be scammers.

Thanks for your help 💞

Sootycat, Testing companies offer different tests at varying prices.

First, decide what you want to test for. e.g. TSH, FT4 and FT3 only. Or perhaps TSH,FT4, FT3 plus thyroid antibodies. Or perhaps something even more comprehensive. How much you can afford may also have a bearing on your final choice of course :)

Once you have decided, I'm sure members will point you at their preferred tests.

Hiya

I'm so sorry to hear about your husband's health issues, its awful feeling crap and not knowing why. I think half the battle is knowing what you've got and what treatment is available, as well as self care.

If you just want a basic thyroid panel which tests TSH, as well as the thyroid hormones FT4 and FT3 then Monitor My Health offer that for £29. But you can get a 10 % discount code from Thyroid UK using the links Red Apple provided above, making it £26.10.

However if you want to check whether he has autoimmune thyroid issues then you will need to get his antibody levels checked and MMH don't offer that. In the past I used Blue Horizon to check for antibodies as these aren't easy to get on NHS. It is more expensive, however.

I used MMH just before Xmas and got my results the next day, which was very efficient. Seaside Susie has some excellent tips on how best to succeed doing fingerprick blood tests

Thank you. I have been trying to find the previous answers particularly from snapdragon. I have to admit to being pretty useless at all this and need a lot of help.

Don't worry about anything. The majority on this forum have had to 'learn' how to use the forum. Especially when we're brand new to it as - like thousands of others - had never joined any other forums.

Put an @ before the name and it will take you to the member you want and it will turn blue Sootycat

Important to also test vitamin levels and thyroid antibodies

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested.

Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least once year minimum

What vitamin supplements is he currently taking?

Only test early Monday or Tuesday morning and then post back via tracked postal service

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and before eating or drinking anything other than water

(and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test…..if taking levothyroxine )

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins
