Alejandrita17,

I have referred to 'iron' as opposed to ferritin because we can have adeqaute /high serum iron in the presence of low ferritin which is only a storage protein for iron.

We know iron deficiency may both be a cause and an effect of hypothyroidism (low T3 levels) whether indicated by labs or not. Low T3 may inhibit good iron absorption via low hydrochloric acid, and lower body temps so inhibiting good RBC formation by (cold-sensitive) bone marrow risking aneamia.

Adequate iron is essential for good thyroid hormone metabolism, together with zinc, selenium, iodine, etc and used in the making of the thyroid peroxidase enzyme for thyroid hormone production in those with a (partial) working thyroid gland. Low iron will also decrease T3 levels and TGB, by raising RT3 in those with middle to high FT4 levels whilst converting T3 to inactive T2.

Sympathetic system symptoms like anxiety, palpitations, irregular heartbeats etc. may worsen with the introduction of T3 meds or trying to raise doses in the presence of iron deficiency.
