Hi long story short . My partner gave her lift to and from surgery . Nhs England by the way

Left her at waiting room . He Had a coffee . Then about an hour and half maximum . Collected her . No incision on neck .

I thought was through neck only and would be a general aneasthetic and then 1 hour in recovery minimum and says operation 17 minutes minimum . Then 4 hours observations on ward and then tablets to take home or sign off by senior nurse or sho . And then the moving between departments . Gowning up . Aneasthetics etc . Then she lives alone and was 78 . It was 5 years ago

I was trying to ascertain whether the surgery is oral route and if any of this is possible. You guys always know so much . I had googled it but someone who has experienced would know better .

What do you mean by "surgery"? The GP's surgery or did your partner take this person to a hospital?

Parathyroidectomy is described as:

What happens during a parathyroidectomy?

A parathyroidectomy is usually performed under general anaesthetic and takes 1-2 hours.

Your consultant will make an incision (cut) in the lower, front part of your neck. The length of your incision will depend on how many glands need to be removed. They will locate any diseased parathyroid glands and remove them. They may send the gland(s) to a lab for analysis. Your wound will be closed with fine stitches or steri-strips.

In recovery you may have a fine tube draining any excess fluid from your wound. This will be removed before you go home.

Your throat may be sore for a few days following your surgery. Be sure and let us know if you are in any pain.

Your length of stay in hospital will depend on the extent of your procedure. Be sure and discuss this with your consultant.

So it would seem impossible that whoever's recollection of this parathyroidectomy is correct.

Why is it bothering you after 5 years? Maybe they had some other appointment which he gave her a lift for. It was very kind of him to wait that long and take her back I would have just thought you were very kind to your neighbour, not sure why 5 years after it is an issue?

in reply tokittyelen

Me neither.

Often it’s not for us to know

Yea I get that but if the husband gave a lift they must be friendly with the neighbour so would you not ask the neighbour? Or if it was for another procedure maybe it could have been a sensitive issue and they didn't want to say what they were there for which is understandable.

I mentioned 5 years as technology changes . So now may be possible but not then sorry . Yes partner very kind .

I only had a thyroid issue from last year so I wouldn't know :( Maybe they had another procedure which was sensitive and they didn't want to say the real reason they were there? Being 5 years ago I just meant it is a long time in the past, I hope your neighbour is still ok

Not possible to have parathyroid surgery without an incision. It can be done as a day case but definitely not in and out in an hour !

My op took 4 hours under GA and I had to stay in overnight.

Sounds like there was some confusion as to what was actually done somewhere along the way !

Hi Poppppy,

Maybe it was a biopsy of a parathyroid? Still, now they can sometime access via incision in side of one's mouth under bottom lip laproscopically. Still, it would take hours not minutes.

Thank you for your kind reply . She speaks often of the fact she had it removed though .

Another (unlikely) possibility. Could it have been a procedure to destroy a parathyroid by some form of radiation?

I have no idea if that was ever used in the UK but there are some references around.

I think it more likely to have been a scan. Would parathyroids show up on a scan? From memory, a scan takes about an hour.

That’s what I was thinking. Great minds think alike. Jo xx

A Sestamibi scan which is the one used for parathyroid imaging is done over several hours as it takes time for the contrast to show up, from memory I believe I was in nuclear meds department for about 3 hours.

I had ultrasound and sestamibi scan.

She talks about the fact that it was removed and she doesn't feel any better . She paid 6000
