I have a nodual that causes me to have hyperthyroidism. 4yrs now. I take methimazole, propranolol, and hydroxyzine pomoate. My labs as of the last year come back normal. But i don't feel like it. Granted my symptoms are not nearly as severe as they once were they are still affecting me. And as of late ive been having this surging like feeling come and go when i lay down. Ive had my heart monitored multiple times in the ER and its always good. Should i stop taking my hydroxyzine. Ive heard it can cause heart irregularities. I just don't get why im still having thyroid issues if my labs are coming back normal...

Bepo Welcome to the group.Do you know your actual blood test results? It is best to work on the actual results rather than just accepting the doctor saying results are normal.

Why? Well with thyroid normal covers a range of results and as long as your result falls within that range then the doctor will say it's okay. For example a range for the thyroid hormone ft4 is 10 to 25. You would be considered normal if your blood result was 11 and also normal if your blood result was 20. You need to work out by trial and error your optimal level...where within the normal range you feel well. You can only do this by monitoring how you feel and what your actual blood results are

It's like shoes. Normal shoe sizes for ladies are 3 to 8. Any shoe size in that range you are considered normal. But it wouldn't do you any good wearing a size 4 shoe if your feet measured a 7.

I dont have the recent er visit labs. But i believe what you say. Recently Its the weird surging feeling in my chest that ive been getting when i lay down thats had me worried. My heart checks out ok. But the lack of sleep is getting to me. Idk. Im just beyond ready to be over this. And unfortunately i reside in America...so getting proper care for anything is next to impossible unless you have insurance or money.

I have hyper nodule and been taking carbimazole for 3 years.

I also was given Propranolol and was told to stop it after 8 weeks but it worsened migraines so resumed it and reduced slowly to a low dose.

I also take a antihistamine as I have sinus problems.

How much carbimazole & propranolol do you take?

Are your thyroid levels checked regularly. What has been tested. The doctors may not be completing a full test so important to check.

Between 20-40mg propranolol and usually .5 of methimazole but ive been take 3x that the last few days to see if it helps. It does not. I still feel crappy and have palpitations everytime i try to sleep. I get checked about every 6months unless i make an er visit. Twice this month.

Propranolol does have a mild antithyroid affect. So it’s helpful for hyperthyroid (not for hypothyroid)

Can you clarify your methimazole dose? Pills come in 5mg & 10mg. Usually they are taken 3 times a day (8 hourly). Are you taking half? (.5) ?

It’s important to take it consistently. It reduces production and the full affect won’t be apparent for weeks later. Taking differing amounts will cause fluctuations and may make you feel worse than small adjustments over time.

It might help to keep to a set dose for both propranolol & methimazole.
