The supermarket shelves are heaving with faux meats and vegan ultra-processed foods. And if you don’t want to put milk in your coffee or on your cereals there’s a load of plant-based alternatives.
So we take a look at how healthy these foods are and what you need to know when you’re doing the weekly shop. Sorry you will have to listen to me eating a sausage roll.
Very strong statements about iodine content. Several mentions of vitamin D. Many questions.
But very clear that reading the labels, in detail, is absolutely vital.
Apologies - should have pointed out that this is likely only available within the UK. Not entirely sure about the details and it might end up on World Service?

Completely under-whelmed! They kept going on about the dangers of saturated fat, despite the fact that that has been disproved for some time. But, no mention of the dangers of unfermented soy. Most unimpressive as food programmes go.
I've not listened to the podcast but it does sound like they're possibly relying on out of date knowledge, what I call 'lazy journalism'.
The researchers on these programmes need to be upto date and could contact the Vegan society or others (for example) for current information. (If they have then I apologise ☺)
Junk foods Junk foods no matter how dress it up whether it has meat in it or "Veg"
There was some plonker on R4 other week bleating on about how meat should be taxed as how he couldn't compete with Real meat with his veggie burgers! Well his veggie burgers are highly processed junk as trying to turn something into something else which it isn't!
If i want Veg i'd go get some Salad/Onions/Pots/Carrots etc etc
Most of this Veggie stuff is high in Oils/salt/Sugars and low in Absorbable Vitamins
Yes I agree. Processed food/junk food doesn't make any difference if it contains meat, meat analogues or vegetables. There will still be preservatives and other additives to make it 'palatable', often high in fat, sugar and calories.
Think it's also time trading Standards stood up and whacked them over the head with false/misleading labels etc
Up to us to put in reports to Advertising Standards Authority (though they are pretty weak and largely serve the advertisers) and Trading Standards. And to the supermarkets' own complaints systems.
