Weight fluctuations,water retention,fat mass

Hi all

Have a nice week end .

Have a few queries.

Any insights would be hearty appreciated

1 .Does hypothyroidism (and sub clinical hypothyroidism)cause fluctuations in weight like going up and down a few pounds (or a couple of kgs) day to day.

Is it due to water retention? And or what else?

If so ,why is water retained so much in the body for hypothyroid ?And what are other reasons ?

2.I often come across some hypothyroid people( writing in youtube video comments) saying they have gained weight of 10 -20 pounds or so quickly in a couple of weeks even when eating and exercising the same.,and they are not able to knock it off easily .

Is it sort of side effect of levy thyroxine ?Or sub optimal dosage or combination of both?

Any practically possible home and natural remedies for reducing water retention.?

*3.Does hypothyroidism cause an increase in fat mass? And change in body composition .

If so why and how does it cause?

Thanks.

Water retention is probably due to excess mucin. Mucin is a mucousy type substance that is found under the skin. For some reason - don't ask me why - hypos have an excess of it, and it attracts and holds water.

What can you do about it? Well, being optimally medicated might help, but not necessarily. So, if ever you find a 'cure' for mucin, please do let us know because we're all looking for a solution! :)

Thanks for ur reply.for the first time I am knowing the word mucin.have known about mucous but not mucin .

Water retention seems very common among hypothyroid.,and many are not knowing how to completely get rid of it.hopefully in future there may be some ways.

When autopsies were performed in years gone by - they discovered a layer of a mucous type substance below the skin of those with a suspected thyroid issue ...

Maybe help your body by drinking lots of water? Not convinced it magically helps but I drink a good litre of cold with added hot boiled water in the morning (with Vit C) and again early evening. Sometimes as well in the middle of the day because it definitely helps with brain fog. I think it helps to keep the kidneys flushed and working - but don’t overdo it because that can be bad as well!!
