I was in two minds about posting this because I didn’t want anyone to think I was bragging, but I’ve had the most incredible stroke of luck and what happened to me may help others here.
In addition to newly diagnosed Hashimoto’s is also have rheumatoid arthritis and complex spastic paraplegia. I’ve been seeing a wonderful NHS neurologist for the paraplegia and had a telephone consultation yesterday afternoon. Whilst talking to him my thyroid issues came up. He not only knew about Hashimoto’s and its link to other autoimmune diseases, but was totally up to date with the latest thinking, told me that my symptoms indicated a need for immediate treatment, and has written to my GP asking him to start me on Levothyroxine straight away.
There are no words for how happy this has made me, but I’m very conscious that this is far from common, hence this post. If you are seeing a consultant for other problems be sure to mention your thyroid issues; some of them know what they’re talking about and are willing to help.

It’s always lovely to see positive posts so please don’t think that you would be seen as bragging! Really pleased for you! Keep posting as you go on your journey with Levo please. Wishing you a good recovery! 😊 x
What wonderful news. Thank you for posting this Horsey07. Far from bragging this post gives hope and inspiration. Can't begin to imagine your relief and I am so pleased for you and also a little jealous. Here's hoping this is the road to recovery - go you!
That’s great news.I’m new to all this but so far my GP seems to be knowledgeable and even called an Endo who picked up I might have Central Hypothyroidism. Just waiting for more bloods to be taken. My results initially were borderline but I wasn’t palmed off by GP. She listened.
That's brilliant news! Though it always does seem strange to be pleased for someone when they've been diagnosed with an illness! If you know what I mean!?
Really pleased that you've found someone that understands, listens to you and your concerns and has the knowledge and the notion to act and get things done for you!
It must be a massive relief! Keep going in that direction; don't stop.☺
Best wishes.
That is so great to read 😊 thank you for sharing and I look forward to hearing how you progress.
It’s also really great advice to raise existing health conditions with Consultants - I am guilty of remaining mute on occasions where I have assumed that a specialist knows what meds I’m on, etc. Also, ‘multi disciplinary teams’ don’t necessarily liaise with MDTs from other areas.
So it’s safer to become your own ‘care coordinator’ and keep the various medical disciplines informed of all treatments - and,
as I have discovered, often fill in the gaps in their knowledge …….
