People on here are often folks who don't feel well on the standard treatment.Doctors are very poorly trained, even the specialists, about the thyroid and its effects.

Medication other than levothyroxine is not widely available from doctors.

Doctors tend only to look at TSH to judge the level of thyroid hormones.

This leaves people feeling let down and ill.

On here we share our experiences of what we know and how we have managed to get improvements in our health because the doctors have not been able to do this.

There’s approx 2 million people in U.K. on replacement thyroid hormones…..roughly 90% are female

Approx 20% of patients can not recover on just levothyroxine

That’s not a small number…..

Vast majority of endocrinologists are diabetes specialists and useless for complex thyroid disease

There are only small number endocrinologists who specialise in thyroid/adrenals/pituitary

There are a very SMALL number of thyroid specialist endocrinologists who do think outside the box and will prescribe T3…..a even smaller number will prescribe NDT

Email Thyroid UK for list of recommend thyroid specialist endocrinologists who will prescribe T3

"There’s approx 2 million people in U.K. on replacement thyroid hormones…..roughly 90% are female"

I really hate to say this because I'm not a 'feminist', but I FIRMLY believe that If the statistic were the other way around, as in 90% men, treatment options would be much better.

These endos turn a blind eye to the plethora of books and information from people who are not endos but know there's a better way. They know the symptoms exist and its not because of some other condition, which is caused by thyroid problems. There's too much suffering out there for this to be ignored, but they do ignore it. It's a travesty to say the least.

My son in law didn't know about thyroid issues before he met my daughter, but since, he says it seems like every time he turns around he hears of someone else's wife, daughter with thyroid issues. He cannot believe how many women have this. He's yet to hear of a man with, but we do know they exist. It's like a common problem that's never really spoken of. It's like an epidemic that's being ignored. Even CATS are getting thyroid problems more than ever before. I've had two cats with it (both female cats), and it was said to me that in the 90s vets experienced a giant leap in the diagnosis. Now there are "radio-cat' centers all across the states (USA) to deal with the issue. It's very expensive, too. $2000 for an injection. Seems the same has happened in humans. More and more people are being dx'd everyday, too.

One would think that since Levothyroxine is among the top 3 prescriptions filled that science might take a closer look at what's going on 🤔. But no, I don't think it's in their be$t interest to find out anything about this cash cow. And just look at the mfrs of Levo. Always changing things up!! GoodRx put Levo as the number one Rx'd drug in the USA in 2018. Other sites have it interchangably in the top 3. I think the alarm is going off and nobody is listening. Imagine all the people who are undiagnosed. I think there's a staggering statistic being ignored. Oh yes, get your mammogram, colonoscopy, cholesterol checked, but meh, thyroid is ok (just keep the ranges wide). They're dealing w/enough problematic women who are just hypochondriacs, psychosomatic, depressed, overweight cuz they eat too much etc etc.

The internet has been a valuable asset to all of us dealing with this medical problem. Endos shiver inside when they hear about it. They KNOW. I'd be suffering at the hands of a mainstream endo without the information I've learned here and elsewhere.

Must be the same one as me! Started muttering about TSH being 0.04 - maybe have to stop T3 if it drops any lower. Same blood test showed T3 to be 4.87 (3.1-6.8) so I’m hardly over medicated.

I fully agree that it is because it is a mainly womens problem.. Say the word "hormone" to a man and they react like a vampire to garlic!
