Can someone please let me know if a different brand of levothroxine will mean that my menstrual cycle will still be regular. I have been prescribed 50micrograms of levothroxine to be taken once a day and my menstrual cycle seems to have disappeared. I was very regular before starting on this medication. Can anyone shed light on this please. Any help would be greatly appreciated. T. I. A

I wasn't aware that levothyroxine affected your periods, I'm on 75mg a day and my periods are fary normal
I'm 5 days late. The leaflet states in the side effects section that the tablets can affect menstrual cycle. I usually spot a few days before a period but nothing this time.
I started on 50mcg as well but that was 11 years ago so I don't remember if it stopped my periods however I tried to up my dose from 88mcg to 100mcg and I was a week past my start date. As soon as I went back down to 88mcg it started the next day! It's possible that 50mcg is too low for you and it's stopping your period but don't worry once you're on the right amount it will start up.
Hi thank you for your reply.I'm taking levothroxine as my TSH level is high and it needs to be brought down to about 2. I didn't think taking 50micrograms of levothroxine was going to delau/stop my period. I will need to speak to my endocrinologist and see what he says.
My TSH was 5 at the time I started. Two years prior I had half of my thyroid removed. If my TSH were 2 I would still feel very tired, even with a TSH of 1.3 I was not well. 50mcg is not enough thyroid hormone but they wait 6 weeks between increases so that your body can acclimate. Raising thyroid hormone also increases the demand for more cortisol from the adrenal glands.
I only started taking levothroxine 2 weeks ago. I'm taking it for fertility reasons. I was prescribed it by the endocrinologist as tsh was 6.6. He said tsh should be 2 or under 2 for fertility.
It should definitely be under 2 if not closer to 1 or under. When you're on the Levo I would make sure you get your sex hormones tested especially progesterone. If you're not on enough hormone it can negatively affect your fertility. Of course if you find yourself pregnant before that then good for you! It may take a few more increases until you get enough thyroid hormone. Getting too little or too much hormone can delay or stop periods. Too much thyroid hormone is the only thing on this planet that will stop my cycles. People who have hypothyroidism often can have higher cortisol levels and I've read that higher cortisol can lead to lower amounts of progesterone. Best wishes!
Hey, thank you for the advice. I've always been so regular with my cycles so wondered what had happened. Only thing different this time was the levo. Hopefully il be able to get my TSH under control soon and my cycles come back. Will need to discuss with doctor. Thank you for all your advice. I will definitely be getting the progesterone levels checked!
Your body is readjusting to the newly introduced hormone. Periods should return to a normal pattern once you are optimally medicated.
Levothyroxine takes up to 6 weeks to initially saturate the body and you have only been medicating for 2 weeks. Your doctor should retest your thyroid hormone levels after 6 weeks and adjust the dose according to results.
Low thyroid hormone can lead to fertility issues by causing disruption with ovulation. A low TSH will ensure best chance of conceiving by keeping prolactin secretion low, and then enough thyroid hormone for baby's needs as well as your own. You will need more dose adjustments after conception .
Good thyroid hormone function requires optimal iron and nutrient levels which are the very nutrients commonly deficient with low thyroid hormone. Have you had Vit B12, Vit D, folate and ferritin tested?
If you have Hashi, you might find supplementing folate as opposed to folic acid more beneficial.
HiThanks for your reply. I've had vitamin d, b12, ferritin and folate levels checked. They have all come back normal. It was the tsh and thyroid peroxidase antibodies that came back as high. I wish the doctor had mentioned that levo might affect my cycle. I'm in the middle of a frozen embryo cycle. Have baseline scan on Thursday and still no sign of period. They wanted me to come in and have the scan but the frozen cycle will probably need to be postponed. I was just hoping my TSH levels would be fine by then. The transfer would probably happen around first week of July. Have been on levo for 3 weeks now. Don't know why I wrote 2 weeks in my previous post.
