Exercising with under active thyroid YAY OR NAY?

Does anyone on here do exercise with hypothyroidism cycling etc.

I have found with my current flare up it helps with symptoms but only temporarily. I cycle to work 5 days a week around 6 miles a day. When I finish I feel fresher and forget I have an Under-active thyroid. However the symptoms then return around 20 minutes later. Is it also the case that the more exercise you do the higher dose you would need?

Jelley93,

Swimming, long hikes & cycling with my dog over the South Downs, I love exercise but struggle sometimes. Not with the exercise but usually a few hours later symptoms that can last from a few hours to several days.

I get a return of that breathless air hunger thing going on, internal vibrations start turning on and off in the middle of the night, and if it's bad that drunk unbalanced feeling we spoke of in your previous post. It's so annoying. My muscle strength isn't too bad because if I can't do cardiovascular I just practice yoga, loads of it 🧘‍♀️and walking.

I eat well and have tried increasing protein although don’t really like it much, and have educated myself on how T3 exerts its effects on muscles from helping the release of fatty acids burned by mitochondria to make the ATP that drives muscle contractions, to increasing myosin and protein synthesis but alas I have come to the conclusion it is my adrenals that are my weakness. Too many years of supporting compromised thyroid hormones I guess.

Just bought some magnesium to trying supporting ATP further, as we can but try.

When under medicated I find I can tolerate weight lifting / walking. Cardio feels great at the time and after for a little bit but would often make me feel awful for a few days (sore muscles, fatigue etc.). My other problem was getting a quality nights sleep after as well. Magnesium spray has helped.

I’ve had to increase my dose as my exercise levels and intensity have increased. I also find sometimes I need a few days off completely + need more food more often.

There's a study floating around here somewhere that says intense exercise depletes T3 which would suggest that if you're doing regular intense exercise you'd need a higher dose of hormone replacement.

There's another study though that says regular low-intensity exercise can help with T4/T3 conversion.

I didn't think to save the links though, I'm afraid!
