My daughter has had her recent blood test results. She is currently on 50 mcg levo. Her treatment started in The summer of last year. She started off on 25 mcg levo but then this was increased to 50 mcg in sep 2020. She had a blood test in dec 2020 and results were tsh 0.75 and t4 at 16 ( ref range 11 to 22.00) consultant would not measure t3. But at that point my daughter felt fine and i was told that there is scope for increase in levo but as she was feeling ok we can leave dose at 50mcg for now.
Following on 7 months from dose increase and the blood test result which we did in Dec 2020 i noticed that my daughter started feeling tired again, she has developed a croaky voice and constipation too. I requested a blood test and again only tsh and t4 was done. Results are tsh 3.4 and t4 11 same ref range.
The doctor suregery to my shock has said results are satisfactory and i am waiting for the consultant to get back.
My daughter has definitely grown since sept and also put on weight.
I am surprised as to how low her t4 has gone. Just wanted to ask if this is normal when treatment starts. I know that she is on a very mild dose for now. I would have expected her tsh to be a lot higher given her t4.
Just a concerned mum.
please help.

Sorry your having such trouble. I don’t know much but I would have thought as your daughters growing that they should keep a closer eye and do blood tests more frequently!! I’d get on to the endo secretary and the gp. Ask if they realise your daughters on levo. The dr that ‘looked’ may not even realise and those levels are not satisfactory. Good luck. It’s dreadful when you have to advocate for your children. X
Thank you for responding, i have already sent an email to the endo but to push things along i will call his secretary tomorrow. Im just glad that i took the steps to demand a blood test as her next blood test was due july 2021. I hate to think how she would've been by then. At least now I can have her dose increased and she can start feeling better again.
If you ever want to get your daughter tested privately Blue Horizon Medicals will test children. I know Medichecks won't. I don't know about the other companies listed on this link :
Please note that being hypothyroid and untreated or under-treated can cause damage to the gut. Many hypothyroid people have low stomach acid which means that food is poorly digested and the gut can't extract nutrients from food. As a result we end up with low vitamins and minerals.
Many patients with thyroid disease find that they feel much better with a gluten-free diet, although some people get no benefit. Apparently, only 5% of people with autoimmune hypothyroidism have coeliac disease, but apparently 80% - 90% of us get benefits from going gluten-free.
The nutrient tests considered most important (by patients) in the conversion of T4 (the hormone in Levo) to T3 (the active thyroid hormone) are :
Vitamin B12
folate
vitamin D
ferritin (iron stores).
If ferritin turns out to be low in range or under the range, or over the range, then it is a good idea to get more info on iron levels. An example of the kind of test I'm talking about it this one - although being a Medichecks test they won't test children :
