Heavy periods - levothyroxine

Hey everyone,

I have had two very heavy periods in the last 3 weeks. I am on the pill 24/7 and don’t usually have many periods. Maybe 3 a year...

Since taking the medication for the last 10 days I have bled so much!

Is it a coincidence or do you think it’s related? Really don’t feel too good.

I do also have PCOS and endometriosis but being on the mini pill stops my periods.

Thanks!

Looking at previous posts

Your TSH was 44 meaning you’re very hypothyroid

But GP only started you on 25mcg levothyroxine

Standard starter dose of levothyroxine is 50mcg

See GP and get dose levothyroxine increased to 50mcg

Which brand of levothyroxine are you currently taking?

Also request coeliac blood test, vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 tested

Plus full iron panel test for anaemia

Important to always take your levothyroxine on empty stomach and then nothing apart from water for at least an hour after

Many people take Levothyroxine soon after waking, but it may be more convenient and perhaps more effective taken at bedtime

No other medication or supplements at same as Levothyroxine, leave at least 2 hour gap.

Some like iron, calcium, magnesium, HRT, Lansoprazole or vitamin D should be four hours away

(Time gap doesn't apply to Vitamin D mouth spray)

Bloods should be retested 6-8 weeks after each dose increase in levothyroxine

Aim is to increase the dose slowly upwards in 25mcg steps until TSH is ALWAYS Under 2

Most important results are always Ft3 followed by Ft4

Ft3 should be at least 60% through range and usually Ft4 will be at slightly higher % through range

All thyroid tests should be done as early as possible in morning before eating or drinking anything other than water and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

If you normally take levothyroxine at bedtime/in night ...adjust timings as follows prior to blood test

If testing Monday morning, delay Saturday evening dose levothyroxine until Sunday morning. Delay Sunday evening dose levothyroxine until after blood test on Monday morning. Take Monday evening dose levothyroxine as per normal

When I first started taking levothyroxine I had 2 cycles of quite heavy periods and hadn’t had a period for a few months so was surprised. It then evened itself out and went back to normal so I think it’s the body getting a kickstart and then adjusting.
