Technically, it is possible to be prescribed Tirosint. But in the real world, no, it is not.
Tirosint is available under several different brand names across quite a number of European countries as well as the USA (and possibly elsewhere).
(And sometimes the brand name Tirosint is used for ordinary levothyroxine tablets.)
Not sure I understand , I have had my thyroid removed 3 years ago I was on Synthroid but moved back to U.K. and cannot get Synthroid here I tried Levo made me very sick ? I’m back on my remaining Synthroid right now I read about Tirosint less fillers at a loss
If your GP would write a prescription for Tirosint, it would be legal for a pharmacy to dispense the product.
However, it is NOT licensed in the UK and would have to be imported by a specialist medicine importer. That company would very likely require a letter from your GP.
Further, the cost might be exceedingly high - so it is likely it would be refused on the NHS and cost more than most would be able to afford if purchased on a private prescription.
Exactly the same prescribing and importing is also possible for branded Synthroid. With the same issues.
You say "I tried Levo". Do you realise that there are several formulations of levothyroxine in the UK? We often find members do very much better on one make than another.
UK Levothyroxine Tablets
🔹 Accord – branded Accord Levothyroxine
🔹 Advanz – branded Mercury Pharma Levothyroxine and Mercury Pharma Eltroxin
🔸 Almus – branded Almus Levothyroxine
🔹 Aristo – branded Aristo Levothyroxine
🔸 NorthStar RX – branded NorthStar Levothyroxine
🔹 Teva – branded Teva Levothyroxine
🔹 Wockhardt – branded Wockhardt Levothyroxine
(The red diamond products are just specially packaged versions of some of the other products.)
Is there one that people prefer Thank You so much for this info
It is very individual.
I take Accord. Each of them would likely be "the best" for someone or other!
Which did you try?
I was on Synthroid 100 in Canada tried Levo 100 here .
MA Holder teva U.K. ltd
Although Teva is lactose-free (which suits some), many find it causes them issues such as stomach discomfort.
This might be due to the mannitol it contains but there is no proof of this.
If you need lactose-free, try Aristo - but only available in 100 microgram dosage.
Otherwise, any and see how it goes. (The 25 microgram NorthStar is actually the Teva product - so avoid that.)
I cannot tell you about it in the UK but, it did not work for me in USA. I took it for 3 months and my TSH tripled. The doctor even blamed the result in me not taking it , which was not the case. So, everybody is different and what is wonderful for somebody may not be the same for you. Good luck finding what helps you!
Hi, I have been on Tirosint for the last year and a half as it works better for me than other Levo preparations.I source mine from Athens (hope I still can, Brexit)
I managed to get Endo to write a private prescription for it, but couldn't find it anywhere cheap enough. was over 200 a month.
There is a compounding pharmacy that can make up preparation (4 ingredients same as Tirosint) but that worked out quite expensive.
It literally saved my life as was so ill on other Levo I tried.
