From what I have read in the relevant papers, covid's action on thyroid is only one manifestation of a more general attack on many of the body's resources. I would called covid-thyroid another example of (strange to put it this way) a "non thyroidal illness" syndrome - by that I mean it only affects the thyroid in just one of the many other organs the virus does attack.
