Hi everyone..I got diagnosed about 6 weeks ago with hyperthyroid after feeling sick and shaky for a while..I was put on Carbizamole..About 3 weeks in I developed sudden onset ibs aged 60. (Literally overnight)..anyway I was wondering if anyone else had ibs type symptoms with carbizamole? I definitely wont stop taking them..(ibs wont kill me but untreated hyperthyroid might!).. just seems a coincidence(i didnt have any gastro symptoms before the tablets..) thankyou for reading.

What symptoms do you have? If the carbimazole causes hypothyroidism it could cause IBS, in which case they can adjust your dose.

Hi..thanks for your reply..I have alternating bowel habits and abdominal pain that isnt too bad in the morning but gets worse as I eat throughout the day being worse at night...I'm due for blood tests in 3 weeks to check on my levels ..It never occurred to me that I could be going hypo...thankyou for your input.

Try taking a magnesium supplement such as magnesium citrate as intracellular magnesium can fall during hypothyroidism causing IBS.

Three weeks isn't to long so unless it gets worse you can tough it out.

Don't let them go by TSH, TSH can stay low after hyperthyroidism so they need to go by symptoms and fT3, fT4.

Magnesium blood tests are no use so don't bother asking for one. They measure magnesium in the blood but it's intracellular magnesium that matters and there's no blood test for that. Just try supplementing for a few months and see if it helps.
