Thyroid S 1,000 Count Bottle

My friend has an UNOPENED factory sealed bottle of 1,000 count Thyroid S bottle that expires 10 months from now (prod 8-18, exp 8-21)

Since they take 4 pills per day this would be an 8 month supply.

After opening the factory sealed bottle......Since they are so close to expiration, should they just store at room temp the entire 8 months OR freeze part of the supply?

PLEASE HELP........if we leave at room temp, CONCERNED the meds would be good the first 3 months, however, need the meds to last 8 months!

pretty sure thyroid S is packaged in two sealed bags of 500 stuffed into a single tub so you'll only be opening half of them :-) personally i'd avoid the fridge due to possible condensation issues others may feel differently.

That would be great if there are TWO sealed 500 count bags in the bottle.

How do you manage the TWO bags? Open the top one and leave in the bottle and then after that is used up, pull out the empty top one and then open the full bottom one and leave in the bottle also?

personally i transfer the open bag to a smaller tub that sits next to my pc so i don't forget to take it. the rest stay in a cupboard in a sealed ziplock bag with desicant sachets inside.

NDT should be stored in a cool, dark place, eg as bedrooms are usually cooler than living rooms, maybe in the wardrobe?

I have read that some people do freeze NDT but it's not the best option. You would have to take them out of the freezer just a small amount at a time, eg no more than one month, because they are said to degrade quickly after being frozen then thawed. Every time you opened the container to remove some you'd be letting air into the container, it should be as airtight as possible in the freezer.

I think of the two options, the cool, dark place is the better one. Use an airtight box such as a Lock & Lock box and also add in the little silica gel packs you get in bottles of supplements, etc.

Even though there is an expiry date, medications do last longer than that. I am using T3 that has expiry date of June 2019 and there is no loss of potency. I know it's a different product entirely, but no medication is going to suddenly stop working on the date on the pack, over time there may be some loss of potency but that would be noticeable.

those US military studies on expired meds suggest most are good for a long time after expiry.

I've bought Thyroid-S in the 1,000 jars for a while now, and your friend's should be fine right up to, and for a while after, the expiry date. I suggest she decants a month's worth at a time into another jar, for daily use, then keeps the original jar somewhere safe. Mine live in the bedroom, the jar is dark so there's no problem with the light. I've never found any NDT goes off, but I do always decant into a smaller bottle if the original one is large.

Are there two 500 count packs in the 1000 count thyroid is bottle?

Would using a plastic funnel and funnel 100 into an empty, used 100 count bottle with the used dessicant pack work?

Also, do most people swallow Thyroid S whole OR do most chew it before swallowing?

Mine have always been a jar with 1000 loose tablets in and a desiccant pouch on top and some bubblewrap, with the outer cardboard box sealed. Sometimes in the past I've bought smaller amounts and they've arrived in foil packs in an envelope. I've never received a jar of 1000 with foil packs inside.

You could certainly use a plastic funnel to decant some, I just hold both jars round the top and pour some in. I used to count them out for a month's worth but these days I don't bother to be so precise. I leave the desiccant pouch in the main jar with the bulk of the tablets and don't bother with one in the jar I'm using.

I always chew the tablets, but only because I always have done for any NDT, it seemed to be the thing to do some years ago. I don't think it matters as long as you're careful to avoid drinks and food for a while afterwards if you swallow them whole.

How easy are the pills to chew? Do you have to chomp down hard to break or are they pretty easy to chew?

Also, do the pills get "harder to chew" a few months after opening?

I used to take WP and the pills got way harder a few months after opening the factory sealed bottle, but WP only had 3 ingredients so maybe that is why WP got harder.

No they're quite easy to chew and crumbly, I've never had any difficulty chewing them. I haven't noticed much difference between a newly opened jar and a long opened one either. The taste is ok, a bit sweet, if anything. I think many people swallow them whole, but I've never done that.

I may have confused two different thai brands i'll have to open a tub of each to double check.

As it's the potency that decreases, one solution would be to increase the dose if you feel underdosed. Would NOT recommend putting any of them in a freezer.

Do you have a source for this information?

Someone on this site has frozen some of hers and she says they are ok because she only takes out a week at a time. I have frozen the remaining ones I have in small containers so I hope they will still work if I have to use them again. They were going to expire so that's why I froze them.

Someone said as long as you don't keep opening the freezer which I don't because it is a spare one out in the garage. Time will tell if they still work but luckily I don't need to take anything at the moment but I know I will in the future. It is terrible the way people are struggling to get hold of this when it should be available for whoever requires it.
