Apple Emoji - 14.2

helvella profile image

Apple have just released the beta version of IOS 14.2. (The final version will be launched soon - possibly at the same time as the iPhone 12.)

One of the features they seem proud of is enhanced emojis. Indeed, they have included transgendered symbol, bubble tea and beaver. On the anatomical side, a pretty impressive heart and pair of lungs. But ...

Where is the bloomin' thyroid gland?

Maybe next year? If we ask nicely.

What is the significance of the beaver? Or shouldn't I ask?

greygoose profile image
greygoose in reply to humanbean

lol

I was just thinking how useful that bubble tea emoji is going to be. I spend so much time talking about bubble tea that it's going to be wonderful to just use the emoji instead of having to keep writing out bubble tea... Pity I don't have an Apple computer! lol

helvella profile image
helvellaAdministratorThyroid UK in reply to greygoose

Don't worry - they are all part of the Unicode Emoji which we can expect to be available cross-platform - eventually. :-)

Not much use if you don't know what they are. Just had to Google bubble tea. Here in the far north almost off the edge of Scotland, we would class bubble tea as a cocktail. 😂

helvella profile image
helvellaAdministratorThyroid UK in reply to Lalatoot

There are, I am quite sure, more I don't understand than those I do! 😅

This site has so much information about emojis that it is utterly overwhelming:

Do you ever get the feeling that things are going too far? Or am I just a grouchy old Boomer? lol

helvella profile image
helvellaAdministratorThyroid UK in reply to greygoose

Often.

Big emojis - like at the start of this thread - are usually fairly clear. But when they are as small as individual letters, it can be very difficult to make them out at all.

And when you want to type one, that can be a real challenge!

greygoose profile image
greygoose in reply to helvella

And, working out what other people have typed can be just as difficult. There's someone on here - I'm afraid I can't remember her name - who always puts what looks to me like a glass of milk and fox at the end of whatever she posts. And, I've been dying to ask if I'm seeing straight. lol Didn't want to be rude, though, but if you're reading this, milk fox, please let me know, as we're on the subject. :D (one of my favourite emojis - although I prefer the name 'emoticon'...)

Going too far - that’s what I said only this morning when I read this -

“Colour experts at Pantone have created a new shade of red called Period with the Swedish firm Intimina in a bid to 'embolden people who menstruate to feel proud of who they are'”

OK - I found it in the online DM where I go to see what I should be disgruntled about - amazing how it never fails

greygoose profile image
greygoose in reply to Fruitandnutcase

Yes, that is most definitely too far!

glad I’m not the only one nonplussed by the term bubble tea! I was with that judge who asked “who’s Gaza?” 🤣😂🤣

Seems the bubble tea (not upgraded to IOS 14 yet so no emoji ☹️) comes with a health warning having 20 spoons of sugar ensconced within

Goodness - I’ve never fancied bubble tea - I hadn’t realised how sweet it is, the store I pass always seems to be frequented by (hip?) Chinese / Asian teenagers.

When you read the article the ‘tea’ sounds absolutely disgusting. Hopefully it won’t last.

I used to pass a bubble tea shop when I walked from the railway station into town so I knew about that - not sure I’d have recognised it from the emoji - still not sure about the badger but then I’m not sure about most of the emojis.

Helvella - is there some sort of emoji dictionary - translator for people like me?

Thank you - reading down I had to laugh at this question ‘When are the 2020 Emojis Coming to iPhone?’

Shows my age that I hadn’t given it a thought - apart from the fact I don’t understand most of the emojis and don’t use them in case they are rude and I offend people - who on earth would ever be worrying about something like that in this day and age.

helvella profile image
helvellaAdministratorThyroid UK in reply to Fruitandnutcase

Well the answer is probably around 13/10/2020 when the new iPhone 12 range announcement is expected - and the IOS 14.2 will be available.

in reply to greygoose

There I was thinking I was quite switched on for my age, but just had to look up bubble tea!

greygoose profile image

It's an aquired taste! As are emojis, really. And, I'm wondering why we're going back to hieroglyphs after thousands of years of joined-up writing...

helvella profile image
helvellaAdministratorThyroid UK in reply to greygoose

Thing is, even those of us without classical Egyptian eduction can often identify them. At least to the point of recognising the same symbol in different documents/stones!

Many emoji are entirely unfathomable without looking them up.

greygoose profile image
greygoose in reply to helvella

Indeed they are.

When I was in Egypt - a long, long time ago - there seemed to be a lot of hedghogs amongst the hieroglyphs. I asked the guide what they represented, and he muttered 'food' and wandered away. I still don't know if he was joking...

Fruitandnutcase profile image
Fruitandnutcase in reply to greygoose

Bet he wasn’t. Years ago we knew a guy who was a doctor and who had worked somewhere out in Africa and he was talking about how to cook a hedgehog by wrapping it in mud before putting it over the fire - suppose like jacket potatoes on a bonfire. I remember looking at him aghast and saying ‘did you kill the hedgehogs first? ‘ and he replied ‘you could if you wanted’. Now I’m not sure if he meant that or if he was joking.🦔🦔🦔🦔 poor hedgehogs.

greygoose profile image
greygoose in reply to Fruitandnutcase

Well, legend has it - or perhaps it isn't legend, I don't know - but I have heard say that gypsies used to eat hedghog and it tasted like chicken. But, what surprises me is that they have hedgehogs in Egypt - well, perhaps they don't, now. They ate them all! I always though hedgehogs were temperate climate animals. But, what do I know! What's more, I don't want to know! Please, everyone, keep your hedgehog recipes to yourself. It doesn't bear thinking about. :'(

helvella profile image
helvellaAdministratorThyroid UK in reply to greygoose

I have just found a hedgehog on my drive as I walked back to the house! Only a small, mostly paved, drive. And it was sitting/lying there - seemed to be absolutely fine but perhaps a touch disturbed by me.

greygoose profile image
greygoose in reply to helvella

Don't get many hedgehogs where I live. You're lucky! But, I did once see one when I lived in the country, striding acorss the 'lawn' on surprising long legs... At least, I think it was a hedghog. 🤔

in reply to greygoose

Why would anyone eat mashed up tapioca with no-one standing over you and no jam? 🙄

greygoose profile image
greygoose in reply to

Sorry? I think I missed something, here! lol I wouldnt eat tapioca pudding if you paid me! Jam or no jam. I was lucky in some ways in that I grew up in a tapioca-free zone (the down-side was plain boiled potatoes, with no gravy!!!), because my mother didn't like it, either. There was, of course, school dinner tapioca 'pudding' - not really worthy of the name 'pudding' - but I got kicked out of school dinners at the age of 7 for refusing to eat a mince pie. I've always been a picky eater. :)

in reply to greygoose

I thought it was tapioca in bubble tea!

greygoose profile image
greygoose in reply to

Oh? Is it? lol I've never actually drunk it - don't know what tapioca tastes like, anyway. But it's not mashed up. The bubbles are little balls, and you suck them up through a wide-bore straw and swallow them whole - according to my granddaughter, anyway. I never thought to ask what they were made of.

BootsOn profile image
BootsOn in reply to greygoose

As I understand it, the aubergine is a man who is feeling frisky. When I was young, beaver referred to a lady's lady garden, because it was furry, I suppose. I believe the modern equivalent in an emoji is the taco. Do I need to explain further? 🍆 🌮

Hope I don't get told off...

Lora7again profile image
Lora7again in reply to BootsOn

My son tells me it is a p**** and you have to put something with it like a peach or something else .... I didn't want to listen to anything further so I told him to be quiet lol

Yes an aubergine and a taco as I've posted above.

Lol at you telling him to be quiet 🤣

Fruitandnutcase profile image
Fruitandnutcase in reply to Lora7again

You see what I mean - it could be so really easy to get things wrong and upset people. Who would have thought an aubergine wasn’t exactly an aubergine and a taco wasn’t just a taco - never mind what the alternative meanings were. Goes to prove - your ire never too old to learn something new 😉

I rarely use them on this site but I have wondered what this one is used for 👯‍♂️?(men with bunny ears)

helvella profile image
helvellaAdministratorThyroid UK in reply to Lora7again

There are so many that I simply cannot imagine using!

👯‍♂️ Men with Bunny Ears

Emoji Meaning

The male version of the 👯 Woman With Bunny Ears emoji.

The Men with Bunny Ears emoji is a ZWJ sequence combining 👯 People with Bunny Ears, ‍ Zero Width Joiner and ♂ Male Sign. These display as a single emoji on supported platforms.

Men with Bunny Ears was added to Emoji 4.0 in 2016.

emojipedia.org/men-with-bun...

👯 People with Bunny Ears

Emoji Meaning

An iteration of the Playboy Bunny known in Japan as a Bunny Girl. Usually depicted as an attractive woman wearing bunny ears; a bunny girl can also be seen in anime as a hybrid human/animal known as Kemonomimi.

Some versions of this emoji, such as Apple’s, display two girls dancing, each wearing a leotard and bunny ears. Other interpretations show the face of one woman wearing bunny ears.

The two-person version of this emoji is often used as a display of friendship, fun, or "let's party".

People with Bunny Ears was approved as part of Unicode 6.0 in 2010 under the name “Woman with Bunny Ears” and added to Emoji 1.0 in 2015.

emojipedia.org/people-with-...

And the "inclusiveness" aspects might end up being a bit of an own-goal. I support the aim. Having skin colour variants of human-based emoji means that instead of one, neutral colour (unrealistic yellow) we have another five skin tones to choose from. Which will end up with us so often using the wrong one/ones - as interpreted by some readers, somewhere. I think I would choose a randomiser so every time they are displayed, they change skin-tone entirely randomly.

Next year, vitiligo skin tones...

This is one of the ones I've noticed can be quite different on different devices.

I really went down the rabbit hole a few years ago trying to learn emojis so I could get down with the kids! My era is the ones made out of punctuation marks like the stuck out tongue for being silly :p

Anyway, I found that there are quite a few different character sets that do their own version of each emoji. Apple have their own ones which you can usually only see on an apple phone or device. If I'm remembering correctly I think there is also an Android set, and other software like WhatsApp have their own personal set, there are about 4-ish that you'll see commonly around the place. They are all different interpretations of the one sentence or so description that is officially released for each emoji. This is why sometimes if you create an emoji using a keyboard it may look different once you type it into a site like HealthUnlocked - it's thrn being interpreted by your browser, and someone else coming along and reading your post might see a slightly different picture.

I find it a bit overwhelming to think of the possibilities for faux pas! Some interpretations of these bunny people make them quite sexualised. But in others they show people who look more like chubby toddlers, and are shown as a more neutral head and shoulders view. I think this is one of the worst offenders, though so are some of the dancer emojis. Again, some interpretations of those are quite sexy but others are a dancing toddler!

Lora7again profile image
Lora7again in reply to SilverAvocado

A few years ago someone sent me a very unpleasant emoji which was very explicit ... I have no idea where they got it from but I blocked the person who sent it to me. Years ago we would do our own emojis on sites like Friendsreunited. ;o)

SilverAvocado profile image
SilverAvocado in reply to SilverAvocado

My attempt to learn how to use them didn't amount to much. The only two I use much are the blushing face to indicate embarrassment 🥺, and the screaming face to indicate horror😱. I find the screaming face is appropriate for so many things these days I have to make a conscious effort not to use it too much!

Oh yes, and I like a few sleepy ones if I'm saying goodnight to someone 😴 I hear this runny nose one means sleepy in Japan because they think of a runny nose as meaning sleepiness 😪!

Lora7again profile image

TSH110 profile image
TSH110 in reply to helvella

If they can do skin colour choices they should do a nice selection of cat coats! I wonder if there is a way to send emoji feedback to their developers? I’d like some gardening tools included and a nice sighthound

SilverAvocado profile image
SilverAvocado in reply to Lora7again

I've just had a look at Helvella's link and there is a brand new cat coming! It looks like maybe it's a back cat standing up to go with the orange one we already had!

I like some of the new ones. There is a teapot so now we can talk about tea. A few more craft work ones, to go with the ball of wool and a few others we've already got. A few more cleaning and domestic life ones which I like. A few years ago there were no emojis for anything to do with cleaning or house work and it seemed a big omission. Also some nice looking insects, which I don't think have been in before.

SilverAvocado profile image
SilverAvocado in reply to SilverAvocado

Hehe! You can see I'm still working hard to keep abreast of things ;)

Fruitandnutcase profile image
Fruitandnutcase in reply to Lora7again

As a fellow cat lover I don’t think there are enough cat emojis certainly not enough variations.

I was talking to my techie son last night about emojis and asked what he thought the beaver stood for and he said ‘A beaver?’

Think I’m maybe reading too much into emojis. I found a dictionary of them and it said what they all were but somehow I’m stuck thinking there must be some way or reason to use them that I don’t understand. If they are as straightforward as a beaver being for a beaver then why bother really. I always thought they had some sort of hidden meaning but maybe they don’t.

Lora7again profile image
Lora7again in reply to Fruitandnutcase

I just googled this

Beaver emoji is a cute image of the water rodents best known for chewing down trees and making dams. This is one of the better emojis to use when talking about someone who is good at building things. It can also be used in a rude way to make Fun of someone's teeth.

Fruitandnutcase profile image
Fruitandnutcase in reply to Lora7again

Now that’s the sort of secret meaning I was thinking of. I mean how often does beaver crop up in the emails most of us write so why the need for a special emoji.

As for cats - I’m always searching for a better cat emoji, so far I’ve only see the two you showed which aren’t always what I want to use - I’d rather not use one than use one which doesn’t feel ‘right’ to me.

Lora7again profile image
Lora7again in reply to Fruitandnutcase

I have just found some free cat emojis but I am wary about putting them on my pc. They look cute so I have put them as my profile picture. 😺

helvella profile image
helvellaAdministratorThyroid UK in reply to Lora7again

I see little to no point in trying to subvert our systems to display non-standard emoji.

A major part of the idea is that they can be transmitted to other people without needing to send graphics. So if they are not present on the recipient's system, the recipient will either have to download the emoji, download a graphic, use a substitute, or fail to display.

Lora7again profile image
Lora7again in reply to helvella

I was thinking of using it on other sites not this one because I actually rarely use them on here because it is a support site. I do use gifs on twitter and find them quite funny but I don't feel the need to use them elsewhere.

Fruitandnutcase profile image
Fruitandnutcase in reply to Lora7again

I know, I’ve got a feeling when I first started using a computer I downloaded some emojis and really regretted it so I wouldn’t do it again.

Lora7again profile image

I just use them from various sites so they are not actually on my computer. I think sometimes free emojis can come with other stuff that you don't want on your pc.

“One of the new features in iOS 14 is the ability to change the default email or browser app to a third party alternative such as Chrome, Edge or Outlook. A bug in the first public release of iOS 14, however, causes your default browser or mail app setting to reset to MAIL or SAFARI when your iPhone or iPad reboots. “

————————————————

My brother sent me this a couple of weeks ago and told me not to download until they got it right.

When I checked at the time it did appear to be waiting for downloading so I didn’t bother, I left it as it was.

Today after reading your post I checked on the update feature again and it told me I was up to date with v13.7.

So it looks as if v14 is no longer being offered atm.

(Ok so just checked again after a reboot because my pencil played up. Now iOS 14.0.1 is offered to dl which is the first update to 14 where bugs have been fixed.)

Just ignore me and I’ll go back to sleep. 😉🥴
