TSH AND T4 RESULTS - very confused!

Hi there,

I posted a while ago with my results and it was suggested I needed an increase to 75mcg. However, after 6 weeks of being on this dose I just received my results. TSH - 1.44 (range 0.33-5.6) and plasma Free T4 15.4 (6.3-14) so above range. I am so confused by the results and the T4 range is completely different to what I’ve had in the past. Does anyone know what this may mean? I had my T3 tested before the increase and this was great, really high in the range.

Thanks

Clem

Who did this latest test?

Who did the previous test and what were the results/ranges?

My gp surgery did the latest test - however their ranges are not the same as before when I had them done in January. The last test I had was in May with Medichecks:

My results were TSH 1.26 (0.27-4.2)

fT3 5.3 (3.1-6.8)

fT4 14.5 (12-22)

So I then asked for an increase in Levothyroxine from 50mcg to 75mcg .... and then I got these results today!

So your TSH has lowered slightly with the increase in dose of Levo from

previously 1.26 (0.27-4.2) = 25.19

to

now 1.44 (range 0.33-5.6) = 21.06%

but your FT4 is a puzzle. I've never seen a range of (6.3-14), my surgery's range of 7-17 is the lowest I've seen. And for your FT4 to now be over range when it was just 25% through range before doesn't seem possible. Also to have an over range FT4 with a TSH still over 1 doesn't seem possible either. With an over range FT4 you'd expect to see a below range TSH or, at the very least, bottom end of range.

When did you take your last dose of Levo before both tests? It should be 24 hours before blood draw.

Do you have a print out of your new results or were they given to you verbally?

SeasideSusie - I may add that this surgery has had lots of complaints and they have not been clear and have made mistakes before. I am in the process of changing surgery - although this may not mean they have made any mistakes.

It’s really puzzling to me. Do you think it’s wise to wait until my Medichecks test is done this week? As it’s the same ranges as previously.....

I picked up a print out sheet and those are the ranges! I couldn’t believe it I didn’t know what I was reading!

If I were you, I'd ask them to double check the range - it really is a weird one. Mistakes can creep in anywhere, so why not into the computer? After all, it only spits out what a human has put into it, and humangs make mistakes.

Should wait to do medichecks test

Remember to do test as early as possible in morning before eating or drinking any thing apart from water and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

If taking any supplement that contains biotin, stop this week before ALL blood tests

Yes, I would wait for the new Medichecks test, then compare the 2 Medichecks ones.

From looking at the range for FT4 in your latest test, it's very clear that either the lab in question has a spurious and ridiculously low range on a decent instrument, or is using the dreadful Abbott FT4 test which I wouldn't touch with a bargepole. The Medichecks results are far improved, using a reliable instrument and the quoted ranges are in line with everyone else. These I would believe.

Hi everyone. Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. I am almost relieved by your comments - I was so confused at these results. I did my Medichecks blood tests this morning (it was the ultravit women's one so thyroid antibodies are not included - I will do this in a few weeks). I will post the results on here. Again thank you for your comments - you have made a very confused 22 year old feel a bit more at ease (if that can be the case given this situation!) Xx
