Why didn't you ask when you were told he wants you to have this?

Because many hypothyroid patients have gluten intolerance, a few have coeliac disease. Also gut infections like H Pylori and SIBO are more common

Persistent low vitamin levels suggests gut issues

You really should ask him/her. They would be far more likely to know than strangers here who know none of your symptoms or medical history.

I had one because of indigestion and a family history of stomach cancer.

I my case it was to see how severely the trachea had been distorted by my goitre.

My experience was a bit different to most on this web site. I had a blood test (not for thyroid) I had had a very heavy cold and was still very thirsty some time after, and was concerned about diabetes. No to diabetes, BUT my TSH was high, against my wishes the doctor persuaded me to go on 25mg thyroxine, after a year when I had another check up blood test, my haemoglobin was very low. So my usual doctor thought I must be bleeding internally and ordered top and bottom endoscopy's, they were clear. I then found an nhs article, which said lowering your tsh could give you anaemia! Having been a blood donor all my life, (now given over 100) I did not wish to be anaemic, as I enjoy mountain climbing and am very active. So I discussed this with my usual GP, came off thyroxine (I had no symptoms of thyroid problems), took a Boots tub of 30 iron tablets one a day, eat liver once a week and hey presto, no longer anaemic after a couple of months. Also found information that some people (very few) do have a high tsh with no other thyroid symptoms, so assume I am in that category. I guess your iron level has also dropped having been on thyroxine and your GP wonders why, surely you can ask the surgery to explain the reason? The administrator asked me to reply to your query as I had mentioned the endoscopy's. As my case is not the normal, I'm afraid it is not likely to help you. Good luck.
