I love this UK site and will certainly stay on it, but since I'm in the U S I was wondering if anyone knows of one like it here? I have tried searching, but haven't found one other then STTM.
Any U S sites like HealthUnlocked: I love this UK... - Thyroid UK
Any U S sites like HealthUnlocked
There used to be several Yahoo Groups forums but since Yahoo went totally bonkers - turning forums into, at best, mailing lists - they are largely ignored by those not already involved.
Indeed, when I was first looking around at thyroid issues, the USA was where everything was.
I think some of the thyroid websites other than STTM also support some interaction (e.g. commenting on articles) but not aware of any that have the facilities of HU/Thyroid UK.
Despite being UK-based and oriented, we do have quite a number of non-UK members. That is good as it helps broaden awareness and lets people know what is happening elsewhere but I can understand why you might wish a forum more specifically focussed on the USA.
Thank you helvella for your response. This site is such a good resource. I was just hoping there might be something in the U S where thyroid sympathetic doctors and other resources could be shared. There's something going on in the U S right now with NDT formulas being changed and Drs are being discouraged from prescribing them and insurance companies refusing to pay for them. I know you have the same problems in UK and other areas around the world.
I used to be a member of the Healthboards which does have a thyroid disorders section. It is quite a big site for all different kinds of health problems.
Traffic on the Healthboards thyroid disorders board is pretty much non-existent. Even when folks post questions there are zero responses.
I did think the same thing about the Healthboards site when I went to it. Many questions and answers are from 6-7 years ago.
It has been years since I posted on there but I did used to read a lot of the threads which were very informative. I rarely post on US sites now and I actually got banned from hystersisters because I dared to disagree with what someone was saying on there about having a hysterectomy for fibroids. I actually have 5 and once I went through the menopause they caused me no trouble at all. On that site they were advising young women to go to the *castle*(hospital) because of fibroids. In the UK a hysterectomy is a last resort thank goodness but I do wonder if money has a lot to do with the number that are performed in the US. Sorry to any women from the US on this site but this is just my opinion.
Oh I totally agree that the crazy amount of money that Drs and hospitals amass for procedures is a big reason many are done, whether they are needed or not. It's very sad.
Like STTM, I’ve heard that hystersisters are also very opinionated and only welcome those who support their own agendas. No thank you.
Wow - I’ve never heard of a hysterectomy being recommended for fibroids! As far as I’m concerned, that is NOT a common practice in the US. I also have fibroids. I did have a surgery when I was younger (late 20’s) to remove fibroids that were causing me pain at the time. Since then, I’ve had several now for years (Well decades) that are simply not an issue. My GYN just monitors them. (She always said surgery would be a last resort). I went thru menopause early (full menopause by age 49) and am now on HRT, which, along with my thyroid and lupus meds, keeps me functional.
And while at times this site can get a little heated, I find that all ideas are welcome and open for discussion. People agree to disagree and then move on. It’s refreshing!
It has been a few years since I was on there and I made loads of friends. We would exchange recipes etc. They don't like anyone questioning why so many hysterectomies are being performed in the US. I did get a sweet email from the owner with "god bless you" on it lol
Thank you
None that I know of. This site is the best one hands down. I’m in the US and have gained so much knowledge here about thyroid as well as autoimmunity (which I also have). There are many folks here from the US so ask your questions. Chances are someone will be able to help.
Thyroid Patients Canada is good
Hi Treepie. Are you in Canada? Just wondering how Canada might be better for thyroid patients? I live in Michigan and I do know that before Canada ban us from entering because of covid 19...crazy times...a number of people in Michigan would drive across the border to buy their meds in Canada, because the price is so much less. Many also order meds online from Canadian pharmacies.
When I answer posts I assume that the person I'm replying to is from the UK unless they have stated otherwise. I don't always read profiles before I reply. Sometimes posts give me clues that alert me to the fact that the member concerned is from outside the UK.
But if I know that someone is not from the UK then I do try and tailor my response to that person if I can. Apart from anything else it saves me time - there is no point in me giving info that doesn't apply outside the UK.
I really like this site as you can chat with anybody and they are pretty nice to talk to. I have met several people from the UK and they are fantastic to talk to. I feel like I've known them all my life. Kudos to all I talk to.
