Hey, I was hoping for a little advice as I’m getting a little desperate.

For as long as I can remember I have never felt “right” and have been convinced I have issues with my thyroid. I suffer from severe anxiety, heart palpitations, legs cramps, mood swings, unexpected weight loss, grinding of teeth amongst other symptoms. Also everyone in family who are over the age of 40 have been diagnosed with a thyroid condition.

I have had my TSH levels tested over the years which over time are dropping but still within the normal range (1.5 in 2018) but after talking to a family member she has said I should have further tests which look at different factors. My GP is very dismissive and I am seriously considering going private to get some answers.

Currently prescribed sertraline and beta blockers to help with anxiety but they have little effect. Any guidance would be great because I feel like I’m not sure where to turn

Thanks

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested. Also EXTREMELY important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Low vitamin levels are extremely common, especially if you have autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto's) diagnosed by raised Thyroid antibodies

Ask GP to test vitamin levels and thyroid antibodies

You may need to get full Thyroid testing privately as NHS refuses to test TG antibodies if TPO antibodies are negative

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and before eating or drinking anything other than water .

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, best not mentioned to GP or phlebotomist)

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or thyroid antibodies or all relevant vitamins
