Hi all, I have had Hashimotos for a few years and have been taking 100mcg for at least 4 years and been quite ok.

I was recently prescribed Metronidazol 3 times a day for 7 days.

Admittedly I did take it quite close to my Levothyroxine.

From the 7th day I started getting neuropathy and have been feeling terrible ever since. ( over 4 weeks )

It started with a few shocks across my head and face, my neck and spine felt like they were burning for a few days. that burning Sensation has gone but for at least 4 weeks my forehead has felt like it is inflamed or has water Retention. I have what I can best describe as tension Headaches, neuropathy across my face and head, blurred vision, dizziness from the smallest of tasks, occasional nausea, extreme fatigue, Extreme Anxiety, chronic stress. Insomnia. depression.

I had full blood work up and the only thing showing up is the usual, my thyroid tsh is high My Thyroid results are generally always a bit all over the place.

The doctors jump on that straight away for all my other symptoms.

I can only speak on the phone to the doctor they will not see me, they will not refer me, because of the flu pandemic!

Im tempted to pay private for a brain scan Im starting to think I have a brain tumour or pituitary problem. and im also blaming the Metronidazol.

Any similar experiences? help advice please!

I have taken metronidazole for tooth problems and not really noticed anything.

Trouble is, a dental infection can make us feel pretty terrible, regardless, so might be difficult to be sure.

Neuropathy and dizziness often improves on vitamin B complex . You may need to also take sublingual B12 as well for few weeks

Metronidazole (also known as Flagyl) is notorious for causing lots of side effects in many people. One thing you must not do while taking it is drink any alcohol. The combination of alcohol and Metronidazole can cause lots of very unpleasant side effects, and some of them are dangerous in people with certain health conditions. You should also stay off alcohol completely for 48 hours after taking your last Metronidazole.

Have you read the Patient Information Leaflet? And the Summary of Product Characteristics? They are worth reading - very carefully.

I had a bad reaction to metronidazole. It's known to cause bad side effects in some people. Have you ruled out a bladder infection or UTI?

Hi I agree with others - this is a strong antibiotic and antibiotics and thyroid patients sometimes do not behave as they should because the thyroid patient's metabolism does not work at the speed of others. I had a nasty reaction to this antibiotic - here is a link.

Hope this helps you understand it may be the antibiotic.
