Hashi's and corona

Are people with Hashi's more vulnerable to Corona virus?

Just wondered if having an autoimmune chronic illness affects the immune system and makes you more vulnerable?

Thanks

This question has been asked quite a bit recently. You will find the answers with the search function.

You're potentially at higher risk of catching it, as you are immuno-compromised, but it is unlikely you are at higher risk of dying from it as hashis is not a serious health condition in the same way heart disease or lung disease is.

Ok, thanks. Couldn't see a post with Hashis and corona virus when I searched.

Take sensible precautions and remember that it seems to be elderly people with underlying serious health conditions (lung disease etc) who are most at risk.

I asked 2 good, informed doctors about this & both told me it was not a big issue. Have you ever had your secretory IgA tested with a good stool test? That can give you a good idea of how your immune system is doing. The test my dr uses is called GI Map. There's another good one called GI Effects.

Thanks, Luna. That test sounds useful ; will investigate.

I think it’s more people with systemic autoimmune diseases and immune dysfunction who are at higher risk.

As well as Hashis I have systemic autoimmune diseases with something rare called Hypergammaglobulemia - some have the opposite - but the risks are similar. This is a form of immune dysfunction so I am guessing I’m more vulnerable to severe Corona than someone with just Hashis.

Hi I have Lupus plus Hashi's plus Addison's - take Vitamin C - it helps the adrenal glands which WILL be under pressure from the virus - I have an issue with antibiotics that can turn down thyroid response - such as Trimethroprim and Ciprofloxacin which depletes T3 - so whilst this is a virus - for secondary issues an antibiotic would be given- I cannot take Trimethroprim without having a little bit more thyroid hormone to take into account the drop down.

in reply toposthinking01

Yes I have similar problems - trimethoprim gives me a vasculitis purpuric rash and messes with my renal function. I don’t think our high risk is to be compared with those who only have Hashimoto’s though. I imagine Hashis doesn’t increase risk of how badly affected by Covid 19 they would be as it isn’t systemic nor causes respiratory issues like Sjögren’s, Lupus, Vasculitis and Scleroderma all do. I will increase my Vit c intake though!

Hi there,

If you can get any C that is - luckily it is something I always have 'in stock' as I use it for my adrenal function - so I had 6 bottles ordered just before this all kicked off.

The problem with Trimethroprim is that it is a sulphur based antibiotic - and that does not sit well with Lupus or the thyroid gland in some people - same as iodine which is a no-no for some.

Trimethroprim was actually Seprim - before they took out the dreadful component that caused so many health issues - me included - I am convinced Seprim caused my Lupus and that is actually documented in medical circles.

I am staying indoors - been in for a week- cancelled all hospital appointments - not going out at all - apart from a daily walk along a road where no-one really walks but busy enough with cars to be safe. I have had Sepsis twice and the second time was due to getting a minor virus because I have a UTI I cannot get rid of (13 years). So if I get anything else - a cold even - then the immune system becomes overwhelmed and runs off to the cold etc. and leaves the UTI undefended which causes the Sepsis.

Much to the amusement of a.n. others - I have always worn surgical gloves for shopping trolleys etc. - and handling money - I do not touch anything that could cause me to get a bug. So now as everyone else is fighting for their health and safety perhaps people might understand what I have had to contend with instead of being laughed at on occasions.

Last year because of the heatwave - as a Lupus patient I don't do well in the sun - it affects my kidneys badly - I had to stay in for 6 weeks - so this won't be anything new. What a way to live 'eh ?

Keep well everyone - please

Snap to almost everything bar Addisons. But I have scleroderma, Raynaud’s and Erythromelagia so hot and cold weather are equally impossible. Got severe photosensitivity too -,factor50’all year round and patch of skin cancer on my lip keep needing to treat with chemo cream ugh!

I can’t go shopping now - my husband does it - chillers trigger Raynaud’s attacks even with gloves and I can’t stand still due to orthostatic tremor and small fibre polyneuropathy. I’ve had pancreatitis and UTI sepsis also and flu at least 3 times triggered more autoimmunity. So I’m hiding too. Will have to get my vit C from fruit - loads of frozen berries as I’m also prediabetic now so trying to reverse this through extra healthy low carb diet.

So similarly to you I’m used avoiding people - everyone is used to me appearing stand off-ish apart from dog walkers - who often seem to want to stand far too close and ask me about my dogs and tell me unsought info about theirs even though it involves me walking backwards clutching my fold out seat stick!!

Oh you poor thing - I sympathise - these invisible disabilities are often the worst as you don't get a lot of sympathy - I look so well no-one knows what I have to contend with other than my other half.

Keep well

I don’t think anyone knows as it has not been monitored or studied. I can’t imagine it is helpful. We will soon find out.

I asked my endo at my appointment this week and was told that there was no increased risk.

HealthyEmski profile image

Thanks, Babette. Good to know.

I don't know the answer to the question but read this yesterday, which will hopefully put the panic into perspective:

"flu has been averaging between 9 and 45 million cases per year with 12,000 to 61,000 deaths per year since 2010"

So ordinary flu is much more widespread!

Tina_Maria profile image
Tina_Maria in reply to

Could not agree more, all this panic is really ridiculous - the seasonal flu in the UK alone kills between 2500 and 17000 people per season!! - Covid-19 5000 so far worldwide! Hardly a comparison.

What about people who do have the normal flu in a year?? No one makes such a big fuss about that each year and the countries don't grind to a hold either; and the number for those are far higher.

We need to apply some common sense, unfortunately this seems to be in very short supply.

in reply toTina_Maria

Seems more like another attempt to control the masses through fear.

Remember the swine and bird flu scares? And the egg scare, and....

Yep!

And with the flight restrictions and people not travelling, this could be a godsend for governments in Europe to bankrupt airlines, so there is less flying for the masses in the future.... call me an old cynic!
